Your Definition of Fig Addiction

I thought this would be a fun thread especially with Jon's and Ucdavis scion going around amongst members trading scion - plants and so forth.

So whats your definition of the fig bug - fig addiction and how has it affected you.  ; )

Anyone looking for more than one variety.

Definition of the fig bug? Seven 18-gal bins holding 25 potted cuttings each of 50-60 varieties, another 60 needing to be potted and a 150 or so still in the refer waiting to be rooted...and then I go an buy one. There's also the 60 or so outside from the last couple years...jeeze! If I wasn't having so much fun with them I might just be worried. 8-/

How it's affected me? Getting to know all the great people I've met or exchanged cuttings with that I never would have known. I never would have known about UCD's fig germplasm much less visited there. Heck I would never have known there were more than just a purple fig (Mission) and a green fig. Until 2 years ago, that was the extent of my fig knowledge. I just knew I loved to eat them. It's all good!

As I tell the naysayers, it's the journey, not the destination. I'm enjoying the ride thanks to all of you who post and share the wealth.

Sue

I've got to agree with you Sue, it's the journey. This is the best winter I've had in a long long time. I'm never stuck inside thinking what can I do. A special thanks for all who helped me along the way.
48 varieties and counting.  "gene"

For me, the "fig bug" is starting the year 2009 with 6 varieties and ending 2009 with 57...plus another 10 varieties in the past 6 weeks.  Help!

The fig bug has introduced me to one of the friendliest, most generous groups of people I've ever met. (My spouse calls all of you my "imaginary" friends.)

It has made me pray for hot weather, something I have NEVER done in my entire life.

It has made me carefully scan every tree in every yard in every old section of every town I travel to.

It has given me fig dreams at least 3 nights out of every 7. (My favorite was the one about the softball-sized Pastilliere.)

It has made me somehow work the topic of figs into conversations with people I barely know.

It has taught me patience...almost.

It has taught me to count creatively. (Spouse:"How many fig plants DO you have??????)

It has taught me that, if I can get it past the front door, the spouse can't tell the new figs from the old ones.

It has taught me that I can protect my addiction if I can hook everyone else that I know, like my daughters, my neighbors, my co-workers, and the people who deliver my figs. (To the spouse:"But EVERYONE does this.")

NONE of this would have happened if Jon hadn't created this forum and his FABULOUS "Fig Varieties" pages.  What a remarkable resource.
