It is time to begin tracking the ripening order of our figs. If each member posts only once with what is ripening each week in his/her yard, and then uses the edit function to update the same post each week, or so, it will keep the thread shorter and neater. ;-))

This season will be different than the ones that have gone before. We have had some unusual weather patterns this season (hot, cold, hot cold, etc.). So things are ripening earlier, but some are dropping without ripening, or ripening as if they were caprifigs.2008 07-23-2008 The first fig to ripen this season was a Brown Turkey, in a 5g pot, from a UC Davis cutting. A Rattlesnake Island is nearly ripe today, from an in-ground plant, planted about 8 weeks ago, so may still have "pot" influences on its' behavior. All pots are 5 gallon, unless noted.Week of 07-20-2008 Brown Turkey, UC Davis, in-pot. Rattlesnake Island, in ground 2 months. GM #4 heavy fruiter, but dropping fruit. Snowden dropping fruit. Yet this one is good but Nothing is done with it ,not even to give it a proper name. ================================================================== September 14-2008 Tacoma Violet-very good and adapted to our weather. Weeping Fig:Good Tasting large fig Brown Turkey #2:(G Michalev)--The best Brown Turkey so far. =============================================================== September 17-2008 Marylane seedless--Very good and seedless indeed!!! Squierells decimated the other larger trees,Hardy Chicago and another Mars.VS,wich are too big for nets. The end of season is close but some tree will ripe a few good figs even after frost. There are a lot more fruits near ripe on many trees. We will see.!!!! ================================================================ Saturday Nov.1 Last 3 Days I had a few very tasty ripe fruits, from:Marseilles vs black,Violette de Bordeaux(raintree),Zingarella,Ischia Green,Sal's (GEne strain)And Beall.================================================================= 2009 I am happy to report: July 17 2009 First Ripe fruits here in Willingboro NJ Desert King breba Sweet Georg (Viena Fig,from GM collection)Breba See Pixes Below Will coment about taste and flavor in a couple of days ,as i leave them longer on tree to get maximum possible flavor. This Year Desert King is about one week sooner in getting ripe fruits. Sweet Georg,is an young tree,(second year),and fruited first ,now. Happy Gardening
I will like to close the description of my 2009 Fig season: This was the worst Sommer, for figs, with 60 inches of rain for the Year, and the coldest Sommer I met since I grow figs on this Location. At least a dozen cultivars managed to make ripe fruits in this conditions, but they were totally off color, and most dark figs looked somewhat the same, grey green in color. Even in this conditions, the taste on these (Willing),cultivars was good enough for fresh consumption, and fig Jam. The best performer (quality wise),were: Gino's fig,Marseilles vs black,Atreano,143-36,Hardy Chicago,Scot's Black,Mission(GM),Malta Black,Tacoma Violett. Marseilles vs black win in harvest size again, but I have a hint that If Atreano will be hardy here, then it will be surpassed by Atreano. I wish to all a hot dry Sommer in 2010!! 2010 Results
Desert King Breba 07-04 2010 Super duper tasty Atreano 07-06 2010 Super Tasty and sugary,!!! Kathleen Black Breba 07-12-2010 Very good taste
Lindhurst White breba 07-12 Very good Similar to Atreano but much darker strawberry inside.
Marseilles vs Blk. Main crop -07-30-2010,--Now that is early for main crop,no doubt, and a very satisfing ,easy to grow quality fig. Improved Celeste,Main,08-05-2010 Gino's Fig,main, 08-05-2010 Stella, Main, 08-09-2010 Tiny Celeste Main 08-09-2010 Atreano Main 08-11-2010

August 19 DFIC 17 Brown Turkey August 25 143-36 Kathleen Black Paradiso Bronze Don Fortissi black Black Sicilian White Sicilian Skardu Black Brown Turkey #2 Sal(gene strain) English Brn Turkey White Texas Everbearing I would like to mention that all my figs, except Desert King,(breba fig),are in ground here in the temperate climate of NJ,and the cultivars are getting ripe normally without using any tricks, like greenhouse, getting it in and out of garage etc.
Because the Sommer is hot and cooperating, all the fruits to this point are excellent tasting,no exception.
September and October:
A few young figs produced late crops of main crop fruits and some of them were quite excellent tasting, thow later than normal in getting ripe due to age. These are: JH Adriatic Bataglia Green Paradiso White Nero 600m Sal Corleone Weeping fig Late Black Scott's Black The year was good but not great in getting fruits ripe. Sommer heat came late in JUly,then July and August was too hot(100+),and from September 10 it was cooling down to 40 very fast and never got warm again till frost was in at the end of October. To this date since 1988,---2007 was the year with the best warm climate ,long Sommer for fig,and best tasting ripe fruits. Wish you a 2007 type Sommer in 2011 2011 AUGUST 1:I had good tasting Breba from : Sicilian Black Gino Marseilles black vs Atreano JH Adriatic Maltese Falcon Kathleen Black Italian Honey Improved Celeste Malta black August 10:Main crop started getting ripe: Due to a lot of rain(almost every day),my figs getting ripe now trough August are containing too much water to taste as good as they can. I only have three bearing figs right now so my list will be short! Today, 7/24 I ate my first Jurupa and it was very nice. One more tomorrow, probably. I haven't bought any bird netting but have used my pellet gun to discourage the mocking birds. I have no idea why I saved the nest from one of my cats this past spring!

Zone 6a in NW Arkansas here: have a low chill hour PETIT NEGRONNE 25 miles North of my home in Fayetteville: picked 1st Ripe yesterday, 7/30. This tree was air-layered from the mother plant less than a year ago, spent the winter in a greenhouse and is now 7' high and still growing! Hard to believe & I can't explain it. Many more figs to come but 3 other Negronne's not fruited yet, let alone ripe! Flavor: outstanding, poss. could be a tad sweeter. 8/1 we picked our first BLACK JACK & BLACK MISSION. Our BJ had honey-colored flesh, unlike that shown in Jon's Fig varieties. Both plants are 2 years old purchased this past spring--NEITHER plant is impressive as to vegetative vigor or quantity of fruit. Things are really heating up now. So far, have only had to irrigate a handful of times this year, lots of rain--very unusual. 9/25 Yes, VERY unusual: NO HEAT since the end of July!-- Sortof like San Diego coastal weather, come to think of it. But mid-September brought clear days in the 80's = Indian Summer so... I am beginning to get another round of declicious NEGRONNE. We'll be lucky to get a dozen GENOA--worst crop in 10 years!

7B North Georgia Breba 6/15/08 6/20/09 6/20/10 Peter's Honey Breba--Large fig with yellow pulp, mostly sweet, not too "figgy" Not many seeds. 6/21/10 Hardy Chicago Breba 6/26/09 Violette de Bordeaux Breba Main 7/25/08 7/28/09 Peter's Honey Yellow pulp. Soft seeds. Can be very sweet if allowed to turn yellow and soften. Flavor delicate, honey-like. Figs have a large eye that is sealed by sap. Susceptible to splitting during times of heavy rain. 7/31/08 8/5/11 8/10/12 Celeste Very small yellow-brown fig, but very sweet, figgy. Didn't drop figs even in the dry weather of this year. 8/7/08 8/15/09 8/14/11 8/15/12 Violette de Bordeaux Purple-Black skin. Dark red flesh. Intense raspberry/pineapple flavor. Lots of seeds. Thin skin. Different, but very good. Splits when wet. 8/14/08 7/28/09 8/14/11 8/10/12 Hardy Chicago Has a berry taste here. Strawberry to raspberry. Holds up great in wet weather. Purple when ripe. 8/19/11 8/30/12 Black Madeira Very good taste in a nearly all black fig. Exceptional, beats all others this year. Will stand a little rain as eye sealed by sugar syrup, but will split. Last fig ripened 11/12/11 still good Ripens thruout september a fig or 3 at a time, very, very good.9/14/09 9/20/11 Col de Dame (blanca) Unbelievably strong berry taste this year. Really stands up to rain.

Herman Italian Purple and Marseilles Black are main crop. I got one or two breba from the Marseilles Black last May or early June I did not mark it down on my calendar. By the way the Marseilles Black I fine to be very good fig. This week I am getting a few Stella and Atreano. The Hardy Chicago and the Violette de Burdeaux are breba. I am have a terrible time with raccoons. They are getting my ripe figs before I am able to get them. I have started to trap them. So far I have caught a little one. Hopefully more real soon. Vern

My first was a ripe Celeste today, though not too dark. 08-16-08 My LSU Purples are swelling and darkening the best. Brown Turkey has too much plant growth not enough fruit of size & that is dropping? Weather here has cooled not getting above 72 now. Nights in the 50s. Thanks growers.

Here in our hoophouse near Kansas City, we have about a zone 9b environment for the figs as opposed to zone 5b outside. Unusual warm, early Spring temps. started early growth on the figs and then cooler than usual temps. slowed it down. Ripening was a little later this year than last and naturally will extend longer than last year. Didn't keep exact records on everything, so some will be estimates. Guessed early on that I would have at least five dozen figs on the three main trees. More of the HC ripened when small. HC and Violette de Bordeaux will likely be done ripening in another couple days, only a few left.
HC and Vd B will both be moved outside this fall after the addition goes on the hoop. The addition will not be large enough to accommodate all the varieties I have acquired, so Celeste and Brown Turkey will also get to go outside next Spring. The selected ones that are either more tender (I think) or have Brebas that I want to protect will be planted in-ground in the addition along with four trees that get to reside in the main part of the hoop where residual heat from the south side affords moderated temps. that only got to thirty degrees last winter. With the planting outside, I should have a longer season for figs than this year.
Some small trees (two from a Missouri grower last summer and the others from Jon last fall) have fruit on them. Alma has ripened 8 fruit with a few more to go and LSU Purple ripened one that disappeared and still has a few left. King and Excel have a few and Nero has one. I am not skilled enough to know if these young figs will ripen this year, but after last year's experience, I do know to remove them if they do not ripen before cold weather. I do find several other trees with tiny bumps that make me think they are indeed next year's crop. Whatever we engage in, it is a learning process. Am certainly enjoying the fruit of this project!
June 11

Well, I guess I never finished the 2008 ripening order, but it is time to start on 2009 because I had my first ripe fig today. Well, almost. It turned out to be not quite as ripe as it looked, but there are two more right behind it. So, this year's winner is Lyndhurst White. First ripe 20th July was Lattarula followed by Grimo's white fig this week 27th July. The Lattarula was excellent and fruit was left on tree till it started to show signs of shrinkage. Weather was hot at 30*C(86*F) at least. The first white fig from Grimo did not taste too yummie. Maybe it had to do with the 2 sudden heavy thunderstorms we had the last 2 evenings inspite of day time temp hitting the 80*F plus mark. Hopefully with such hot,hot weather 90*F plus now, the rest of the White Fig would taste better. Fig size is large. Other figs in ripening stage and swelling plus turning color are: Adriano Negronne Large Dark Greek Vicenzo Hope to post pictures . Paully

Desert King brebas on both potted and in-ground specimens; three total--most of the brebas dropped. Not as good as the main crop (see note below about main crop). Probably the “5-7” accession I got from Jon back in 2007. See http://figs4fun.com/Thumbnail_Desert_King.html
August 15
Negretta (from Gene in DC). Actually not fully ripe, but birds and ants were beating me to two small ones on a small and young potted specimen on my deck. Need riper ones to comment further.
August 17
First main-crop from the potted Desert King cited above. Last year the in-ground bush ripened all of its main-crop figs (birds and squirrels got most of them). So I seriously doubt that this accession is a San Pedro version of DK. Skins are tougher than any fig I’ve tried before—to the point of almost being unpalatable. But the pulp is delicious!
August 21
A potted unidentified variety from a friend and neighbor here in Bethesda.
August 24
First main crop from the in-ground Desert King cited above.
August 25
EL White Marseilles: Edible Landscaping (EL) apparently has more than one kind of WM, but I do not know which one this is. It froze back nearly to the ground this past winter (we got down to 2* last January and it was unprotected), so this is one that comes back and successfully ripens fruit after major dieback. It’s not my favorite—I only like it when extremely ripe when a hint of butter scotch kicks in; but my younger brother and youngest son say they like it more than Hardy Chicago, which I prefer.

Too bad your list isn't applicable to Hawaii. We have a different order every few hundred foot difference in elevation. At low elevations (200 to 500) I have to harvest year around, every other day .. Trees only go dormant once every 3 or 4 years. Jon -- did I get you Masui Dophon yet?Ken

ummm.... I don't know what a breba is (I'm new to this forum and a novice). Update: I just read about the description of a breba. I didn't notice where I picked it, but looking back at the branch where some were picked off, I think it is on "old wood" thus a breba. I feel smarter! It's a Brown Turkey fig. I usually harvest around 4 dozen throughout the summer/early Fall. I let the birds have the figs at the very top, where I can't reach and I don't want to get on a ladder. I have one fig tree in my small backyard that undoubtedly loves me as it produces such large sweet figs every year! I had a Kadota fig tree right next to it, but it didn't do well at all (two figs the whole harvest season if I was lucky, the rest would brown shrivel and drop off never coming to maturity), so I replaced it with a Meyer's lemon tree. I've had the BT tree for about nine years.

2011 Harvest Season
5/7/11 Unknown Yum (in ground. possibly UCR 276-49) began ripening breba crop (closed eye). 6/15/11 Unknown Yum began ripening main crop (small, open eye). 6/15/11 Unknown Giant (in ground) main crop is ripening.
6/21/11 Kadota (in ground) breba are ready. 6/24/11- Celeste (in ground) main crop figs are coming in! Good flavor.
7/1- Verte (in ground) main crop are ready for harvest. Average weight is 19.5g.
7/5/11- First of the Alma (in ground) main crop figs has ripened. They look like they will be larger this year. Last year's batch were more yellow/green with small to no necks. Could be due to the fact that this year they were produced on one and two-year old wood versus last year's all new growth from the freeze kill. Also, last year the first main crop fruit ripened in early September. The flavor was good. Rich and sweet. 7/16/11 Brown Turkey (in ground) variant producing main crop a full two months earlier than last year despite being killed to the ground the past two winters. 7/18/11 Brunswick (in ground) main crop are starting to come in a few weeks earlier than last year. 7/19/11 Unknown Coronado (in ground) main crop ripening. Grew back from ground after freezing. 7/28/11 Kadota (in ground) main crop is ripening now.
2012 Harvest Season
5/20/12 Verte (in gound) breba crop began ripening.
6/11/12 Unknown Coronado (in-ground) began producing ripe main crop.
6/14/12 Celeste (Willis) (in-ground) began ripening main crop.
6/18/12 Brunswick (in ground) main crop are starting to come in a few weeks earlier than last year. 6/30/12 Celeste (in ground) main crop figs are coming in! Excellent flavor. 6/30/12 Unknown Giant (in ground) main crop is ripening. Delicious! 7/1- Verte (in ground) main crop are ready for harvest. Average weight is 28.9 g. Very good flavor. 7/4/12 Texas Everbearing (in ground) main crop is ripening. Good flavor. Strong resemblance to Unknown Coronado. 7/9/12 Kadota (in ground) main crop is ripening. Good flavor. Almost 3 weeks earlier than last year. 7/11/12 LSU Purple (in-ground) began ripening main crop after being killed to the ground this past Winter. 7/12/12 Alma (in-gound) began producing main crop. Just a few days later than last year. Fruit are larger.

Macmike. We are in a zone 5 in Connecticut, and have ground figs here, are, Marseilles Black VS, Danny's Delight, Hardy Chicago, Sal's EL, Hardy Hartford seem to be cold hardy here. We have been burying them for winter protection. But some are as tall as 8 to 10 feet
For our area of Connecticut, Sal's EL, is the gold standard for cold hardiness, in zone 5. It has been winter tested in our area since around 1990. The original tester ended his testing by keeping out of his collection, only Sal's EL.
The next most cold hardy fig would be the English Brown Turkeys. But, more difficult to locate, and you may have to try several to find one that will ripen all it's main crop figs before frost. But, they are reputed to be able to take temperatures of minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit, through zone 5 without winter protection, and zone 4A with winter protection.
Hope that helps.

Aug 14 2011. VdB-paradise nursery. 1 fig riped. more on the way. 1.5 yr old tree. it might have been late due to all stress due to repotting. taste wasn't all what i have expected from reading on the forum, might be due to tree being young, first crop from the tree, or all the rain we have been having. the next fig will stay on the tree till it's all droopy and winkled up. pete

Connecticut, zone 5. First in ground main crop figs to ripen here. 9-08-2011 Hardy Hartford -About the same size as Marseilles Black, this year. But, to my taste buds taste better then Marseilles Black VS. But, don't think it will be as cold hardy as Marseilles Black VS
9-11-2011 Marseilles Black VS - reliable producer even in shade
9-15-2011 Sal's EL - Sweetest
10-2-2011 Hardy Chicago - Best tasting if allowed to dry on tree. But seems to be a shy bearer, only about 20 figs on a 8 foot tall tree, and three figs on a three foot tree. Will top work it next year, If I can find some one who has a more productive clone of Hardy Chicago.
10-4-2011 Bayenfeige Violetta - Large size fruit with heavy crop. So far it appears for it's size alone, it might be a good commercial fig for areas south of zone 5. In late October Violetta Bayernfeige's main crop became as sweet as fig syrup. This was a big surprise since it had to ripen during cooler weather. It has pushed Sale's EL out of first place for sweetness. But, this has caused a unexpected problem with flies. Along with the increased sweetness, the fruit has become extremly juicy. Almost to the point were one could drink the pulp with a straw. By the time we noticed there was going to be a fly problem, there were hundreds of flies all over the fruit. We most have caught several hundred on fly paper, before frost started to reduce their numbers. This surprise increase in sweetness in late October, early November has saved this tree from being replaced. So, as it stands right now we will keep this tree just for the super sweet fruit in the fall. We had a early freeze this year, and half the fruit did not ripen. So can't tell yet whether or not this will be a big problem every, yet. Also, if the sweetness draws this heavy infestation of flies each fall, one will have to cover the tree/bush with some type of insect barrier.
10-8-2011 Danny's Delight - Variable in fruit size. Ripe enough to pick, But, will wait and see if it can be dried on tree. Our weather forecast calls for a up coming week of high 70 to 80 degrees.
Started raining here around August 8th, and with heavy rains every week, up to just a couple days ago. So any of the above figs picked the last two months was full of water. Except for one Hardy Hartford that was was next to a over hang, from the house. Although soaked with water none of the above soured.

This was taken yesterday, 30May2012, from a LAMPEIRA PRETA about to have ripe brebas (Figos lampos). Close to the bigger fruit one can already see a couple of fruit for the second crop (Figos vindimos) almost ready for the 'wasp's visit' All the best - Francisco (Algarve)http://www.flickr.com/photos/lampo2012/7308975000/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/lampo2012/7308975432/

The origins of this fig (San Pedro -Lampeira Preta) are similar to the fruit shown before on a message sent earlier this month. (*) It looks like that today, the photos are showing a different variety, if we look at the fruit skin and pulp colors, size, leaves, etc. - The variety is exactly the same and the difference resides mainly on the type of soil, the lack of artificial irrigation, exposure to sunlight, more or less influence of dominant winds,,to name a few. I am definitely convinced that the common problem of seeing people calling different names to the same variety of figs may have to with this sort of phenomena. (*) weight - 82 grams and ripening now.http://www.flickr.com/photos/lampo2012/7410862276/

This is my first black Smyrna (Euchario Preto) of current season.
Hope soon to show the white brother which always shows up sometime later. For a while thought this fig close to the Zidi which I believe to be a Smyrna as well. But there are marked differences, notably the pulp color which I believe is deep red on the Zidi.

Very nice figs, Lampo. Unfortunately, only a small area of the U.S. has the fig wasp and the rest of us can't grow those Smyrna varieties without considerable difficulty. Great seeing your pictures though!

Ruben, Thank you. I understand quite well what you say. Many times I think that if I were living in certain areas of the US where the climate is ideal or somehow milder, I would certainly try. From the distance I do not foresee insurmountable odds.
But I agree that 'waspless' projects are simpler and quite rewarding.
In the coming weeks I shall be also showing some of our common figs and (why not!) one or two more smyrnas.
Good luck and take care
Francisco

Here, an early COMMON black fig, (figo preto temporão)as it is called around my place. I am sure it may well have another dozen names depending on the regions where it is cultivated. It is a good fruit, juicy but for my taste, it did not get enough sun. Flavor is ok, fruity, but not very sweet. On some locations, the first figs are ready for pick-up by mid July side by side with the Cardinale grapes. I am inclined to believe that it may well be a close relative to the french variety Pastillière.
