What a beautiful day today !
It is suppose to hit 80 with nothing but sunny skies and tomorrow as well. Next week will bring much cooler temperatures is the forecast but thats ok i enjoy it now.
After my fig plants received good rain last week they were drying up as i felt the containers today and noticed it when i wheel them around with handtruck.
So for first time i got out the small hose , the milk jug, the miracle grow and the superthrive and gave em there drink along with the above as they have leaves now not big but there growing daily it seems.
Well at least the ones that are alive , yesterday i chopped down 1 of  2 santa cruz dark plants and will give it a little more time and then make room for another type of plant. Pick off a few breab's on several plants and left a few on as well no no not to eat.
Have a few cupped plants on patio table in sun as well and they have a home eventually for some retired co-workers, cupped a few panache plants today and hopefully they will do well as im sure they will at least enjoy the beauty of the figs one day if they make it to next stage.
Next week i will probably have to do the fig shuffle again in and out as temps allow and eventually  hope to put all plants in there seasonal place in the backyard where i can sit relax and enjoy them ,fire up a pipe, watch mother natures birds mate, watch my 3 dogs bark at passer byers, and smell the flowers and of course gaze at the fig trees often very often .

I cringed when I saw "chopped down".  I hope that is a euphemism for "pruned"?

Yes. 
Growing up we always say chopped down the tree , basically meaning to the soil level, cutting it all the way as low as can be except i did not need an ax  on this its just several inches tall at best and still dry in the core of it - not much hope .  ; )

Sorry to hear about the Santa Cruz Martin thats always a disapointment when that happens, On the other hand I always laugh when you say fire up the pipe hahahaha. Martin you gotta post a pic of that Pipe now im curious

My figs enjoy this beutiful Spring outside too. It seems I will need to bring them into my garage for 2 nights as temps will fall to mid 30s.
All my smaller plants have 4 or 5 leafes  ,and the biger plants have only abot 3 leafes.
All my figs started from cuttings doing well to .
Martin ,when do you usualy transplant figs from clear cups to 1 GAL. pots ?

I used "fire up the pipe" back in the day. I don't think Martin is into the Mexican agriculture though. He wouldn't have the ambition to haul his figs in and out of the garage!

Here is santa cruz pair from last season , scion recieved from UcDavis March 12th , picture from August of last summer, and here is one of them now.
Thats life growing and storing in garage in my zone .
Oh and i threw in a few pictures of  3 pipes i hand carved and polished with bee's wax. Stems of course are from other throw away pipes i had . Two of them the top of bowl was left in its original briar wood and not sanded down .I carved my name and date in 2 of them the darker one gets smoked more often. Briar is from the Heath tree in the Med and comes from the root of the tree. Dont want to bore anyone but some asked .
Back to the santa cruz dark i personally think its dead but will just keep watering it as needed and after a while i will pull it and have room for yet another different type i have in mind.
At least i have the other matching one and give it a few seasons to see how the figs actually taste and how plant performs if not to my taste i get rid of it to make room for another type.

Martin real nice wood work and the fig trees in 2nd pic look great hopefully the other will show sign of life and come back strong

Hi Remis,
i transfer if i see a good root system together not scattered apart more balled up and or taking over the cup.
Also i have taken them out of cup if the roots start to look bad because i over watered  as well with bad and sometimes good results.

Hi Sal, actually it wont break my heart to lose that one as i have a spare at least, if it does make it it will be a season behind. If it does not make it i will be able to get yet another type when it becomes more available as i have several in mind im looking for. I been busy with cleanup , scion , and things and have not even thought about  the veggie garden darn it, i might have to break down and buy a few spring crop plants like brocoli and cauliflower to start as garden is tilled for first time in years this early without being to wet to get into it and should stop procrastinating about it.With my luck now i get a few plants and weather will get to warm at wrong time and brocoli and cauliflower will bolt on me as they have in past.But i think i will try anyhow as its suppose to rain tomorrow night so i better plant a few early things .

Martin,

The grain in the woods that you used in the pipes is really nice! There is a wood called "purpleheart" that works well for pipes. The more you smoke out of it the darker purple it gets. I'm not a smoker but the smell of a cigar or a pipe is enjoyable to me if its in small amounts and not blown in my face. Oh yea, nice figs too.

I did get many compliments on the smell when i worked , then the smoking ban.
Yes there are several different grains but one never knows until the block is cut. Different grades of block also but thats no guarentee of what grain only a better chance of good grain.
Birdseye, Flame and straight grain, straight grain pipes are an arm an a leg because of there beauty.
Fig trees might get some nice rain this morning then weather will be in 30s tonight.
