This is my first topic hope i don't mess up on the computer. I accidentally may have found a simple solution for gnats, some of you older member maybe have done this before but it is new to me. i put 3 or 4 clove of smashed garlic in a 2 liter bottle of water and simply left it open in my greenhouse (12 by 14) you may have to make adjustments according to your own situation.The smell is horrible but 3 days later i noticed a decrease in gnats, about 7or 8 days they were all gone,all of them. i was tempted to remove the garlic but I'm not taking any chances on them coming back. My intent was to spray the plants with the garlic solution, i done that before for other bugs but i didn't need to. How bad could it smell. Garlic..... good. Water. Good. Lol. The smell is not as bad as the gnats, gnats kill my small plants garlic doesn't , but I'm Italian i like the smell of garlic anyway. Mario i am italian too. Garlic is awesome. Going to try it in my veggie garden. We dont have 5he gnats in the south.. Well we have the flying bitting kind that attack people. They are worse then our mosketoos. And they are bad. Hoping to use this garlic juice on my peppers and such in garden. Leaves are allways getting eaten up. Well, if the gnats do not like the smell they may go and hide in the soil and do their things. Did you water the pot soil with the garlic water? If it is proven to work, it will be an easy solution. The smell wears off after a while. __________________ Ottawan-Z5a, Canada

I'm gunna try it, we cook with garlic a lot and me or my wife dosn't mind the smell at all, the gnats aren't here yet still to cold but in the Summer they are terrible thanks Mario! Allen. Z8 north Louisiana

Caro Mario I love the old world solutions to problems in the garden, especially if it involves garlic. But it would be easier to avoid gnats by using inert materials only, i.e. Peat moss based mix and perlite, e.g. Pro mix hp or similar products. Stay away from organic soils or compost in the early stages. __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

Grazie Raffaelissimo, i was using Perlite and peat moss for the smaller plants but i brought some bigger plants in green house, miracle grow, over watering and who knows what else i did and i ended up whit millions of gnats. I'm not sure if it is a coincidence but the garlic came and the gnats went, good thing they were not Italian gnats! they would have invited their friends for dinner __________________ Wallingford CT, USA zone 6a would be happy to meet and get together with other members near me Wish list; Any fig from any specific place anywhere in Italy

ok, Mario I'm going to give this a shot, I hope it works for me like it did for you. I'll keep you posted,,, rotting garlic can't be that bad can it? lol __________________ Scott, Long Island ,NY All my figs have been exposed to FMV,some have it, some don't. It doesn't seem to bother them so it doesn't bother me.
