Well, OSH had a 25% off "anything that grows" sale and I got two figs for the demilitarized zone known as the sidewalk easement on my property. They had many White Geona, Panache, Conadria and one Desert King. I picked Desert King and White Genoa (I have VDB and Peter's Honey in the back yard).
I want to cut the Desert King down half way (2ft) but it already has decent growth on the top.

If you want it branched shorter (which I assume is you want to cut it down) do it now. It will set it back for this season, as far as ripening fruit, but there is no point in growing more growth on top that you are just going to cut off at the end of the season.

Another option is let it fruit then cut it back. If you have lots of figs all the time it might be fine to cut it back now.

Air layer it, then when you cut it back you have two trees instead of one.

I have had good results with air layering this year. But I just used straight peat moss (not the normal long fiber) but soaked it with tea made from the leaves a willow tree. I made no cuts into the bark. So far no mold no mess and decent roots formed in about 3 weeks. Although I have left them in to keep growing for a while more.

I have coarse coco coir and it worked well for me last year, I am about to start another one with the same coir, expecting the same results.
