Kerry: Thank you for posting very pretty photos. Can you please post the uncut JH Adriatic's figs and leaves? I bought one JH Adriatic from you this spring, but deer ate its figs and leaves. I planted in the ground since the spring 2013. Thank you.

Best,
Tam

Tam ,
Those are KK's photos.
I will post some pics of the leaves on my plants later today. Also have a JH Adr. growing at the small GH where I work and wanted to get some input from Martin and others on shaping recommendations for that tree.
This time of year my plants show the more complex leaf form ,although you find the single and 3 lobe forms on all plants as well.
I know with complete certainty that mine are the real JH Adriatic.

Here are the leaf forms I see on my plants.

If I can swing by work , I'll get some photos of the young JH Adriatic at the GH there and start a new post to get some input on best way to continue with shaping that tree.

Leaf on the right is the dominant form this time of year on 2.5 to 3 year old plants.

Here is picture of one of my first year JHA cuttings, started in March. It
is growing in full AZ desert sun, so quite a bit different conditions than
most of the other examples posted. It has 5 lobed leaves almost entirely.
Here in the desert, the brutal heat of summer is winding down and my
citrus and pomegranates are starting the big fall flush when most of the
vegetative growth happens. Hopefully figs behave similarly, it's my first year
with figs. I'll post some pix later in November, hopefully the trees will be
larger and maybe the leaf shapes will be different?

Probably ideally suited for your climate since JH came from Austin Texas

These are the 2 original plants I received from JH

Oh wow, what a great thread!

Joe H, thanks for the great post and for sharing your spectacular tree with the fig community.

Herman, thanks for blowing my mind with your proposal that JH Adriatic is actually a White Madeira.  (Whoa!)

KK, thanks for making me drool!

Hello,
I have been looking to buy the Adriatic JH fig cuttings/trees but seems so hard to find here in the US, most of what I found available are out of the states. And I read somewhere in here about UCD, I am very new to the fig culture so somebody please enlighten me what the UCD is initial for? I also contacted Figs4fun about buying Adriatic but haven't heard back, anybody have cuttings to spread the wealth please PM me.
I just put my first fig in the yard, it is the Brown Turkey and I've been watching it every few hours! :-)

Happy figging!

It would be nice to see Adriatic pics.  I have that one and it's a monster!  In ground and growing like the weed it is.  Hopefully it will bear fruit this year.

Kenny, you're in luck. There's two on ebay now :) No shame in paying a few extra bucks in the beginning to get a few little trees while you explore cuttings. Seeing your wish list, Hardy Chicago is readily available from online and local nurseries. I think HC is one of the varieties that fruits at a young age, so if possible, might consider buying a young tree....might get fruits this year.  Nice to have a producer or two while you wait out the ups and downs of cuttings. Weather this time of year is pretty good for mail order...wait much longer and you might find shipping in hot weather problematic.

Best of luck to you. BTW JHA came from a single mother tree in Texas, so no need to tempt fate by trying to order from outside the States: you might wind up with a USDA inspector knocking on your door.

@Rick&Pete, Thank you for the information, I looked on eBay before and nothing until today, Thank you for the heads up. The bidding things on ebay is a bit intimidating to me but guess I will try, just wish I can find one that I can hit the 'Buy it now' button, lol.

I figured Chicago hardy is easy enough to find so I'm putting money into Adriatic JH first, sound like the better of the two regarding being easier to grow.

Jon did get back to me today and I'm happy he has cuttings, just not trees. This fig is so beautiful I can't get over the colors and really look forward to have a bite!

:-)

Hi Kenny,

Welcome! UCD is the acronym for University of California, Davis campus. I believe their agricultural department works with the USDA to propagate and distribute plant matter for research and educational purposes. For this group, it basically means once a year we can request a ton of fig cuttings and only have to pay for shipping. :-)

As far as Adriatic JH's on e-bay, you really can't go wrong with Keith's (KK) listings. I have been nothing but impressed with everything I've purchased from him.

Take care!

Hello Tamar,

Thank you for the information regarding the UCD I will have to try and see when they have cuttings to give away.
I hope I will get this fig, I have a good friend whom I admire for his teaching in gardening and sustainable living, is also love figs and this particular fig is on his wish list as well. I hope to be taking a cutting to gift him when I travel back to my home country.

Thank you! :-)

I had purchased some JH Adriatic cuttings on ebay late last year from KK. I was able to cut them into a few more pieces and I now have a few Adriatic JH starter plants in 1 gallon pots. If anyone is interested, please PM with an offer. I am estimating shipping to be around $12 or so.  Thanks!
