I just ordered 7 Black Mission plants from Florida Hill Nursery, directly from their web-site.  The small trees will be mailed on Tuesday, and should be at my door on Thursday.

I will let you know when I open the box.

Funny you say that.  I just ordered a Black Mission Yesterday from Florida Hill.   I ordered a Green Ishia about a month ago.  It's growing like a weed.

I ordered a Black Jack and a Black Mission in 4" pots back in the Winter of 2010 from Wellspring Gardens. Both plants have been very slow to grow and nether has produced a fig. The Black Jack just started forming its main crop at the end of June so the jury is still out as to whether its true to name. It seems to have a weeping tendency. The Mission appears to be correct, but without fruit, you never know. Neither plant shows signs of FMV. The transaction with the vendor was uneventful.

EDIT: I double-checked my notes and realized that I bought the Black Jack from Almost Eden, not Wellspring Gardens. My bad!

OK, so the reviews are good!  LETS just wait till you get ripe figs and see if what you bought is what you got!

Just jaded from past online experience from another online seller.  Ordered Italian Honey, got VDB or some other illusion which nobody can figure out..........Don't even want Italian Honey anymore, unless he rides a motorcycle, 6'4" charming smile.......

Suzi,

I know this much, the BJ is not a Celeste or a BT. It has violet terminal buds, fruit buds and violet tint on the leaf axils. Haven't seen that much violet on my other varietals. Time will tell.

I bought a black mission, ischia green and magnolia figs last June from wellspring gardens. They are in 3 gallon pots now 2 feet tall. Transaction went fine, but expect a very small tree with a leaf or two at most. I'm talking 3-4 inches tall at most. They left positive feedback and I also bought a few other items.

Is Florida Hill Nursery, and Wellspring Gardens the same?

*********************************************************

@ northeastnewbie.....
Were the "clean" Black Missions" plants growing in the same area as other infected plants?  If yes, do you think your other plants may have contaminated your newer, clean trees, and now they are showing symptoms?

Does Wellspring Gdns. use tissue culture to propagate their figs like Florida Hill?

I have read that if plants start out "clean" and they are planted near infected plants, the clean plants can be contaminated also.

Very confusing.

HOWEVER....None of the trees in The Bronx, or, Westchester County show any evidence of FMV, and it's been that way for as long as I could remember.  Any guesses why?  Cold winters?  No vectors for spreading?

No, just two different sellers who are selling LSU Purple at a reasonable price. Floridanursery is $6.99 and claims it is disease free because it is tissue cultured.  I would order.  I just want to make sure I get the right tree and not find out years later that it's just a Black Mission or BT.

I ordered the LSU purple from Floridanursery. I think when I bought mine, it said it was supposed to be 4 to 6 inches, but the one I received was not that big. However, it was very healthy and has grown quite a bit. It will be maybe two years before it has a fig, unless it really shoots up by the end of the srason.

Well I placed the order for the LSU Purple, but after paying, Floridahillnursery said they can't ship to CA.  If so, it's unlikely they will ship to AZ since they have more strict regulations than CA.  Darn!

U P D A T E ......

My seven, "Black Mission" trees arrived today, from Florida Hill Nursery.  They were packed very nicely, and arrived without any damages.

Let me be very clear.  The "trees" are very tiny, each about 6-10" tall, with stems, maybe, about 1/4" diameter.... and, were grown in  plug-trays.  I expected this, so I am not disappointed.  It will be years until I see some figs.

When they start to get taller, I will twist them/pleach them together...as an experiment.  That's the plan, anyway.  We'll see what happens.

Frank

I love to share photos. So here is my order that I recieved yesterday.   I ordered a Black Mission, 2 blackberries, and a Basjoo Banana.

Second photo is of the leaves on the Black mission.   Orange spots is?   My guess is rust (somebody can tell me if I'm wrong).   Probably from growing in a warm humid greenhouse during propagation.  I've seen this before and normally the new leaves don't have it.  As soon as I have enough new leaves, these turn yellow and I clip them off.

I've got a smidge bit of a Blackberry thing going on too......

The rust way up the plant is from the tight growing conditions, watering from the top, and high humidity in a greenhouse. Your little fig will begin forming buds all up the stem because it was previously shaded and they will react to the sun, it will then start suckering. Plant it deep in its new pot, mine were very rootbound.

Dan, and Brent....

Thanks for pointing out these tiny, brown spots.  I too saw some, but not every leaf had them.  So, that's what "rust" looks like?

Not a bad deal...and, virus-free trees.  Now, the wait for figs.

You are lucky. From the same nursery, your one is bigger than mine. Mine is less than 6 inch.. Long way to grow and get figs.

I bought many seedlings from wellspring,  you will gets a very small seedlings but they will grow fast. But i am not satisfied with figs will need at least 3-4 years before they begin to bear.

Yes, the little trees from Florida Hill Nursery are years away from bearing age.  I never expected that the trees would be anything but tiny, seedling-size.  The description clearly states the sizes....8"-12"...very small trees.

No harm, no foul.  I got what I paid for.

Got this Marseilles White from another Ebay seller.   The plant started out very small and has grown like a weed.  I pinched the tip and left only 2 lower figs. I know I'm not supposed to keep figs on such a young fig tree, but I don't care.  I love the leaves on this thing.

Dan,

Your Blanche/Marseillaise White is not true. Your Verte/Ischia Green is suspect. Looks like it will be predominatly 5-lobed with auricled basal lobes. That does not describe a Verte. Perhaps when it gets a few years older. Hopefully they are something tasty.  Good luck!

OK, I'm no longer enjoying the mystery.  It's been eating at me all weekend.  Anyone have an idea on what kind of fig the one with long lobes on it is.   I'm amazed how fast it's growing.  There are not very many places you can go to have your figs identified by just leaf shape.  I will post images of the fruit when they ripen, but if anybody has any ideas right now I'm open to hearing suggestions.

thanks

Here we are now at the end of September.   The two figs are still green at the bottom of the trunk.   In Post 30, you will see what this fig looked like at the beginning of June.   This fig grew the most out of all my figs.  It grew like a weed.   I had to pull the pot out of the ground because of Frost warnings.   Anyone have any ideas on what it could be? I wish I could tell you it was a green or brown fig, but it doesn't look like I will find out.

I posted this on the other thread as well ....

I hate to say this mostly as I am new and don't want to start flames but I think you need a warning.

I would not trust that I would get the variety I actually bought from Florida Hill.  Between the owner going on websites and vouching for his own business while pretending he is simply another hobbyist until he got busted.   Or from the fact he sends out mislabeled plants in the past to such a degree that I don't think it was an accident.     I don't trust the business and would not order from them....that is my personal opinion.

WillsC,

I have heard the same story many times concerning Florida Hill. Some people are reporting FMV on these tissue cultured plants as well. This makes me wonder if FH is actually selling tissue cultured plants or not.

SEGeo,

I just don't trust FloridaHill......if anyone wonders why here are the reasons.

In the Gardenweb thread I am Bamboo_Rabbit btw.  I know for a fact he sold mislabeled plants on several occasions, both bananas and blueberries.  The part that really made me go hmmm.....is the sweetcrisp blueberry one of the hottest varieties going right now he had them in stock when everyone else was sold out.  Then a year later all the people that bought them over the coarse of months find out they got hosed and did not get sweetcrisps.  Not only that the people didn't even get the same variety of mistakes which really makes one stop and wonder.  FloridaHill did send new plants to the people but it is too early to know if the new plants are correct.

I bought several banana plants and a hardy orchid from Floridahill spring of 2011. The plants were all small but looked healthy and I was happy with them. A couple of months later the orchid bloomed and althought very nice it was not the color that I had ordered - pale green instead of pink. I emailed them half a dozen times but they never responded at all. It was an $8 plant so I just let it go but I will never order from them again. My bananas have all done very well but who knows what they are?

When I am considering ordering from online nurseries I am not familiar with, I check out the GardenWatchdog site.  They have reviews on over 7500 nurseries, and have saved me from making a number of mistakes in the past.  Here is what they have to say about the two nurseries being discussed in this thread:

Florida Hill Nursery - http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/7888/

Wellspring Gardens - http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/3735/

I've purchased many plants from Wellspring. The prices are very cheap compared to others. Also, their shipping price is very reasonable. I got 12 banana plants, 15 or so different indoor plants, and about 6 fruit trees from them this past year. They are all really small but did very well. Some of the banana trees are already over 8-10 foot tall.
