In the summer I teach a college class on top of my regular 40 hr a week job so I'm pretty busy. I water, weed, and run. I went out of town this weekend, got in not long ago, tired and exhausted. Brought out the hose and looky what I found! Looks like it is growing on new growth so I am assuming this is a main crop of fruit. These are growing on my Chicago Hardy. Well, this is Seattle and I'm not sure if these will ripen in time so I am not going to hold out hope considering it is July and there is one that is bigger and many that are little baby embryos. Totally surprised me though! I have this little tree baking along my south facing fence. So then I checked all my other figs and saw more growing on my Desert King. It was a huge let down to realize it was also a main crop fig. Since we don't have the wasps here I should knock them down since there's no point in the tree putting any energy into them. I got no brebas. Funny how life works. The rest of my garden was equally busy. My new day lily bloomed! As well as some bulbs I planted last year.

Yep, it is tough to see the little figlets on a new small tree and know they need to be removed. I have been removing figlets from most of the trees I started last winter. However, it gives ya hope for next year. The fig in the blue pot looks like its well on the way to becoming a nice slingshot tree. The day lily flower looks outstanding. I am a big fan of day lilies.

You might not have figs you can eat, but you have a beautiful garden. If you are near Trader Joe's, i saw them today for $3.50 for a carton of about 15 figs.

Nichole, I agree your images are fantastic. This is a little off topic but I've noticed that some people that post here have a watermark/signature/copyright thingy on their images whereas many of us don't. Is this to keep unscrupulous ebay fig sellers from using the images? Are there other reasons for doing this? I don't consider my images particularly valuable but I'm wondering if I should do this as well. Is there imaging software that puts this on automatically?

I have had my photos stolen so I try to watermark most of my photos now. This blog post explains what happened to make me watermark my photos.http://www.niroha.com/2012/06/copyright-shame.html

Oh and yes there are lots of software options. I have a mac so I'm slightly more limited, but a quick google search for 'watermark software' brings up a lot. I use Visual Watermark.

I hope you got some money from them for doing that to you! Attorneys are expensive! What a bummer! Your photos are beautiful! And you sold me on NEVER supporting that company that stole the photos for their ads! Suzi

Thanks for the compliments on the photos. I'm glad you all liked them. I'll let you all know how this main crop of Chicagos does as time goes on.

I'm not nearly as bleary eyed today so I re-scrutinized my figs. My Brown Turkey (Monrovia), Italian Honey, Negronne, Desert King, and Chicago all have main crops growing on them. At this point if they are just little embryos it's too late in the game for them to start, right?

Bumping this up for the above question regarding the main crop figs I'm finding that are just now starting to form on some of my trees. They aren't baby trees so I'm not as worried about the tree size but I'd like to know if I should knock them off if they're just now starting to form. I don't think there is enough time in the season for them to mature but this is my first yr with them and would like confirmation before I knock them off.

I do not know your climate so this is only a suggestion, but why don't you leave at least one per tree to see what happens? It will help you next year as well.

If you knock them off, you'll never know if they might have ripened. Leaving them on will give you a chance for ripening. However, at some point in time, it is better to knock them off. The question is, at what time in the season is that point? I usually pick off the figlets that start forming in August.
