Hey everyone, Does anyone have a comprehensive list of which varieties are self-pollinating and which require a caprifig? On the same topic, what about raising caprifigs? How can I get fig wasps in my area? This is all still a little mysterious to me! Thanks, -Greg

Those are loaded questions covering a lot of topics which have already been discussed here at great length, with the possible exception of the Caprifig/Common/San Pedro/Smyrna list, which would be exhaustive with well over a thousand varieties to index. Wasp can't survive in Ohio. It needs a warmer climate where fruiting occurs regularly for survival. Lots of discussion on wasp here also and at figs forum at Gardenweb.

Octo here is a link thats probably outdated that has some fig types listed .http://escholarship.org/uc/item/4cw1k586#page-3 C= common type - self pollinating S =smyrna type- requires the wasp SP= San Pedro Type - breba crop only for most of us -main crop needs wasp ? = needs more study - Jon may chime in with link to more current list from UcDavis it escapes me at the moment. There are of course many not listed but its a start for you to look at.

First of all, the species is Ficus Carica. This applies to (almost) all varieties of edible figs. If your only goal is to raise fruit in a non-Mediterranean climate, then you should stick with the common type. These are not self pollinating, but do not require pollen to set fruit. They will set and mature fruit on their own (meaning, they do not need another tree to pollinate), but the seeds will be sterile. If you are seriously trying to breed a new variety, then I'm guessing you would have already know all that and wouldn't post the question here.

I also wanted to add this, since it has such a wealth of info: http://figs4fun.com/Fig_Links.html Jon has been working hard to compile critical fig data at that page. Tons of info that is way outside the scope of what I could summarize in a post. Worth revisiting every night to read a doc or two.

The problem is your area like mine is not a good environment for fig wasp to live. So stick with self pollinating. From my limited research I know that Brown Turkey, Celeste and Chicago hardy are self-pollinating. A friend told me Back mission is self-pollinating. I know a lot of people will disagree with me after I researched how the poor wasp pollinates the fig I am hesitant to bite one fig. Some researchers say it is ab fig full of wasp.
