I put mine in my self watering end of last year. At 1.5 yrs old its about 3.5 feet tall from top of pot. Also seems to be beating any signs of FMV. A couple figs are there but we shall see.

I have it and BM side by side. Boy, they sure look almost identical. But the Preto is shooting up like a rocket unlike BM

I had my bm 2 seasons and it grew turtle slow besides that the leaves unripe fruits look identical main difference between the two may be strain of fmv although preto does show some it grows nicely . But I noticed my preto is growing bumps on the trunk like the mother tree no pruning done but definately has bumps.

Good Observation Dominick,I would add Ital 258 to the similar, but of course they could be different in adaptability and  health so for us only the healthy one will make it to Spring, and ripe fruits till the end of season, because this particular kind of fig is late in forming embryos, and so is late to ripe too.
It can be late in my opinion, but if it ripe fruits in October that is OK,to keep the most healthy, out of the three I mentioned.
Because they have a particular taste and flavor that is unique to this type of fig.

Dominick the bumps I was refering too look like this and are at every node and going upwards. Maybe mother tree has some decease and those bumps are not from Pruning???

Funny, I have other trees that do that. Almost look like something is going to emerge like a new shoot.

Haven't noticed it on the Preto yet

Good question, or maybe the ties are a little too tight below?? I took an airlayer above the bumps and have it set aside to see if the same thing will happen. The Figo preto does seem like it might have ripe figs by late aug early sept. here as they started forming right at the end of may this season.

My black maderia is doing the same thing, have your parents tasted both the preto and black maderia before?  I am wondering if they are similar in taste.

Chivas my black Madeira didn't ripen any figs last season and is now dead. The figo preto was once the most common fig grown along the northern coast of the island. Today it is extremely rare to find due to the cherimoya plantations in the last 100 years.

Could the bumps be the trees source for storing energy to feed the fruit? I don't know if asking it right.

Hi Nelson,
Pls have a look on a couple of pics now filed on 'Ripening order', of the local figo 'preto temporão', (early black) which becomes ripe around here by mid July. I am sure somehow through times it might have migrated and then spread through both Archipelagos in view of a genuine preference of those people for dark figs.
Tell me pls if your 'preto' has any similarities,shape/size/pulp color etc.. it is a good fruit, flavored but not very sweet
I am sure it may have more names.

Ola Francisco, Looks different in shape as your Figo temporao is more flat Figo Preto is more pear shaped and pulp is red. I will certanly take pictures when they ripen. Lovely photos by the way of the figo temporao looks amazing.

a year seems like a very long time when i'm waiting on the new trees to give me figs.. fico preto is definitely one of them. mine shows very little sign of FMV. just a touch.

Nelson, I would say Sue's Preto is the same as Blk Maderia. I have both and if you want Blk Maderia, I can start an air layer. My BM is from Jon.

I finally have both and am looking forward to the comparison. Got my Preto back in late winter, early spring as a rooted cutting and it has put on a copious amount of growth. It was setting fruit while only about a foot tall, which of course I removed. It is setting again and I'm tempted to leave one or 2 on as it is now much larger. Got My Black Madeira very recently and am not expecting the same rate of growth, but it looks happy and should put on some size before the season ends.
