Greetings to all and I hope all had a good holiday.

To my friends in the Northeast, I hope your life is making progress towards recovery from Sandy.

I happen to love dried figs, and to that, does anyone have any idea or experience with the shelf life of dried figs?

48 deg now 75 forecast for today, figs still leafy (except for Celeste)

Thanks for this post.  Gives me a chance for a segue into something I read in the news today about a small pineapple farm in Hawaii fighting the big boys with it's "only picked ripe" and no blemish to market philosophy.  They DRY the blemished fruit, or make it into juice or fresh chunks and also dipped in chocolate slices.  That way instead of tossing a fruit with a blemish, they can cut around it and use all the fruit.  The value added helps their business thrive.

Sorry I have no clue about the shelf life of dried figs, but I have many ideas now about what to do with my blemished figs.  Not that they'd ever make it past my greedy open mouth, but would love some dipped in white chocolate!

I guess it would all depend on the storage method.....bag on counter< bag in fridge<bag in freezer<vacuum sealed in cupboard<vacuum sealed in freezer.  I would bet the last option the figs would stay good for many years if not indefinitely.   Moisture and heat are the enemies.   I love dried figs as well.

I had a bag of dried figs that was bought from the store. they got lost in the pantry and i found them about 3 years later. they were not vacum sealed (this would be the way to go) but they still were yummy

Danny....

The  shelf-life of commercially dried, and packaged figs will last longer than your shelf-life, even if you were stored in Tupperare.  But seriously...., they last a very long time, and a 10 second zap in a microwave will soften them, and freshen them right up, and restore that soft, jammy texture.

The food stores up here in Da-Bronx are loaded with both 'white' and dried "Mission Figs"...and, they will be in stock until way past the holidays.  The "Black Mission" are my favorite of the two...but, I'd take either, or.

However, if you are talking about home-dried figs...I have no clue how long they will last.  But not long in my house.

They have a longer shelf life on the upper shelves. Can't see them. Can't reach them.

fully dried figs have an indefinite shelf like.  Sugar is not friendly to microoganisms if there is no water.

Many people like to semi-dry figs.  Those will still have moisture and will need to be eaten relatively soon, but can be preserved by freezing.

Probable desired fig: Smith, St Jean, JH Adriatic, CddB, Gulbun, Pastilliere, Sucrette

Rooting:  Smith, CDDB--this pretty much means I have my fun tries (tho' important since they are truly desirable), and only interested for this year: Gulbun, BM, 187-25, or something wildly exotic or precious that nobody has any good reason to send me.

I like the taste and although I like preserves, there are times I like the dried for cooking.  So far I have dried and whole frozen.  I like the dried in Vacuum bags because I do not have to go to the freezer or preserve cupboard when cooking.
