Hello friends, looking for someone who can share a few cuttings of this variety. Would like to hear your experience in growing this one. Thanks, Leon

Leon, would it be the same as " Native De Argentile"?  I read about it at the UC Davis portal - it intrigued me.

Yes, it appears synonymous. Thank you for asking.

Leon, If it is one and the same ad the Native de A that is at Davis, then it is an excellent fig. I lost my tree last year, so an starting over. Didn't seem to take well to the hot-cold cycles we had last summer. But the fruit is top notch.

Jon,  When you say the fruit is top notch, do you mean it's rich and figgy or berry flavored or honey flavored or just good fruit that doesn't split and is a nice size?

Thanks!

I sampled these at ucdavis while visiting with Jon a couple year ago. They are very rich and good tasting. But i don't remember what happen to myssmall tree. I don't think it was a good grower.

I put it on next year's order to arrive in spring of 2014, and I'm an early girl.  Get the order in early.  Lots on it.  Wonder why it doesn't grow well.  You'd think in San Diego it would.  It might love the hot desert where I live.  I'll give it a whirl!

NdA is an exceptional fig!  Very sweet, very rich, a little tough skin but definately an awesome fig.  I got one tree that's 4 years old and around 6' in a 30gal container.  I got 2 other small ones, one  in 2gal and in 1 gallon pot.  Al 3 came from UCD.  Definately a keeper!  Those tasted at UCD this year were awesome and same for last year.  Not a huge tree but who cares!  Here are a few pics.  Enjoy!

Leon here is thread about it. I took down the pictures but still have them on disk.
I did not think the taste stood out compared to others in my yard so tree was destroyed .

Thank you, each and everyone of you for your generous reply.
Pit- beautiful photo as always. It sounds like it would be an excellent fig to grow. Early as well.
Thank you Dennis.

Yeah all that I know- but the name doesn't show up anywhere but here or UCDavis. All it means is early.  Really I answered my own question. But it goes by Violette d'Argenteuil there in France.

I'd also be available to help, Leon, if others cannot.

Dom, as mentioned, Argentile is the location, Hâtive is "early". So "early of Argentile", basically. This is the explanation from several French coworkers.

Yeah talked to French fig collector. It is in a fig conservation on the island of Porquerolles off of Marseilles.  According to him it goes by Violette, but it just semantics anyway. ;-)

It's a very beautiful fig. The color defies description! The more I find out about French varieties the more I feel they are the best of all.

Hey Greg,
This was in the additional information on the varieties page

A small, oblique-spherical violet fig with strawberry pulp. Good quality and dries readily. Condit has only a meager description of this variety and I just acquired a plant likely to be this variety in Nov 1998. I expect to trial this variety with northern growers since it should be very suitable for areas with cool summers. It is/was grown in Argenteuil, a Parisian suburb, for market. Northern France is not noted for having warm summers.(006)

I
would assume (oops you know the addage) it would be okay in your area.

Hative, native, of Argenteuil in the present health,it is in,does not grow well or ripe tasty,in cold climates, nor is early or cold hardy.
Maybe that was then, when in France but ,the present specimen,is badly infected ,in fact that is why it died,in San Diego,as per Jon story.
Mine went Kaput too.

Someone posted an article in French about fig growing in the Argenteuil area. As I remember, it suggested they could be using specialized growing techniques.

Real reason:Cultivar is diseaSED.

What I got out of Jon's post was that he believed he lost it due to hot and cold cycles. He didn't mention disease.

I agree that Jon is the fig guru but even guru's can't control the weather.

That makes my day Dennis. I should be getting mine on Monday or Tuesday from Jake. Hopefully it will adjust well as our weather is about the same at the moment.

Do you have any pictures you would like to share or perhaps a taste profile?

Mine which came from well respected member from NJ and a Ucdavis cultivar it grew well in container despite FmV early in its life later it hid during the hot months similar to our VdB.

The plant did produce breba also but i always knocked those off.

The parent was cut at ground level later in its life after one of the 2 main branches snapped in my hand when moving it and trained a sucker as the lone main which grew 3 ft last season and produced figs like parent in that season.

I destroyed plant as with its parent plant figs just not good on my palate despite what i have read about this cultivar.
No not my climate either its my palate for i grow long season types like maderia and it taste wonderful here in pot culture .

Here is the original parent -first pic.
and pictures of sucker 2nd and 3rd pic that was i trained after cutting the parent down to soil level.

Growth recorded over 2 month period in these particular dated pictures, notice how much girth on main it put on from 2nd to 3rd pic and figs can be seen before ripening along the main branch from down low and upwards.

My post #29,was intended for the person that started this thread,DR Leon.
When he reads that Bass,Dieseler, Jon Verdick and Herman2 grew it and none of them have it at this moment,he will figure out why,and take the right decision.
This Forum is here so we learn from one to another and so do not repeat the same mistake, again and again!
Hot and cold cycles in San Diego:If it can't take that, then it all makes sense,it will never make in the northeast, with 0*F,to 103*F,cycles

To Dieseler and DrLeon:My Native de Argenteuil also fruitted ripe main crop, and ,it resembles Hardy Chicago, but is nowhere ,as good as Hardy Chicago in taste and flavor,so I see why Martin discarded it.

greenfig,

you should be able to order this from UCD. they send out very fresh cuttings. some people are concerned about FMV/FMD with UCD cuttings. but only few has shown extreme case for me. others are growing very nicely, including one  of NdA.

I think my only Native de Argentile is just starting to turn around.  It seems like the FMV had created a choke point on the stem that was narrower than the new growth.  The stem diameter is increasing and corresponding to the increased rate of new growth.
