Looks like the season has begun. While checking my young trees I found these sprouting new leaves.

Gene thanks,

That's encouraging to see. I have swelling green buds that should burst any day. Maybe this rain will push them out.

Hi Gene,

So far (02/11/2013), this is what I have seen:
  • All of my pomegranate trees have leafed out or have swollen buds.
  • All of the stone fruit have swollen buds.  Two peach trees have blooms (this is way to early, I am thinking I need to top work the tree to another variety)
  • All pears (Asian and European) have swollen buds
  • VdB / Stella (I still don't know which it is) - In ground - swollen buds
  • Ta'Cenc - In ground - swollen buds
  • Atreano - In ground - swollen buds
  • Unkown (Persepolis, Iran) - In ground - swollen buds
  • Alma - In ground - swollen buds
  • Italian Black - was in 3 gallon/planted today - leafed out
  • Panache - 3 gallon - leafed out
  • Vernino - 1 gallon - leafed out
  • Unknown (Calabria) - 3 gallon - leafed out
  • Green Greek - 1 gallon - swollen buds
  • Fico Negra- 1 gallon - leafed out
  • Hollier - in ground - swollen buds

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't more cooperative this past weekend.  I was trying to get all of my potted trees planted, but it was too wet and muddy.  I will say, trying to get trees planted in muddy conditions is miserable. I did manage to get 5 (2 figs / 2 pomegranates) planted.  The remaining 18 trees will have to wait until I get back from my trip to get planted.  Hopefully things will dry up a bit by then.

Gene,
I got an atreano with swollen buds, but everything else is sound asleep, including my pear. I find it odd, because I see trees coming out everywhere and I'm only 40 or 50 miles north of you. Oh well, I'm sure it will be any day now. But it is supposed to get down in the thirties a few times this week, so keep those little guys warm!

Cal,

I find it amazing what a difference there is in just a few miles.  I'm about 30 miles northeast of Austin.  While my fig trees had cold damage as early as December, there were trees in Austin which had not gone dormant, yet.  Give them a week or two.

Thing is....when Spring sprungs early and then it freezes...it's not such a good thing.

Agreed, Dave. That is my biggest fear. It happened last year and it was NOT a pretty sight. Keeping fingers crossed.

Last year my only tree to suffer from late frost was my in ground Paradiso. It budded and then we had a frost which killed all the buds. It budded again and the same thing happened. I was afraid I'd lose the tree. The third time was a charm, but it delayed the ripening into the rainy season so all was lost.

My fig trees are still quite dormant unlike Jon's. There has been a long run of temps in the 20's-30's up here so I don't expect much for a couple more weeks at least. I noticed my apple tree has pink buds on it though so Spring is near.
