I am always looking out for figs that may be appropriate for the Center for Historic Plants fig collection at Monticello. Thanks to thunderbird1956 I was able to add one new fig to this collection last year. This year I(we) are hoping to get Yellow Neches from UCD and to continue researching to see if this fig is an appropriate candidate.
Reculver looks like another possible candidate but I have yet to discover anyone in the US that grows this fig.
Does anyone know anyone who may have this fig?
Thank you,
MGG

I looked at buying it from Jon some time ago.  I don't remember the story behind why I don't have it right now, I just remember having it on my wants list.

I found one interesting Reculver reference in The Fruit Manual, A Guide to The Fruits and Fruit Trees of Great Britain by Robert Hogg 1884.  http://archive.org/details/fruitmanualguide00hoggrich   You can find the file on the link.   Names, as you are aware, are a confusing issue.   Keep that in mind as old documents like this are examined.    In this document under Black Provence - synonyms listed are Black Marseilles, Reculver and Noir De Provence.     I have also seen it listed from different sources as a synonym of the Mission fig.   At this time I have not located other early references to this varietal name.

Ingevald,
thx - I hadn't seen that publication yet.
It is linked with Black Marseilles and Mission (among others) and is even listed as 2 separate figs.
I found in the UK but not here yet. Oddly it's on myfolia;

Dan,
I'm confused. Can you explain what you are talking about?

In Eisen's writing's.

Reculver.—Medium; about 2k inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide; pyriform. tapering:
lopsided cheeks; short narrow neck; no stalk. Low, branching ribs, distinct
from stalk totheeye. Eyesmall, closed or open, with small, rosy-colored scales.
Skin slightly hairy, of a brownish violet, covered with a faint gray bloom.
Pulp thick, amber-salmon, lightest at eye, turning salmon towards the stalk end.
A good fig. Leaves about 9 inches by 3. deep, broad lobes and two shallow
spurs. Not identical with Black Marseillaise, as suggested by Dr. Hogg.
There are two distinct figs known as
Reculver. The author has not seen the
variety mentioned by Barron.

Thank you Martin. Does this sound like Mission to you?

Baud sells this fig, so if anyone has ordered from Baud and gone through the process of quarantine etc, I am thinking it should be around in the us somewhere.

Martin,
Hmmm. Any idea what variety this points to? Other sources seem to keep saying Mission for one of them (of 2 Reculvers). At this point the only person who has ever had a Reculver in the US is Jon and he lost both the ones he had and doesn't remember where he got his. Mike at EL just thinks it's another name for a more well known variety. I haven't heard back from Reads or heard more from Mucklestone -- the only nursery I've found that sells Reculver (they are in the UK).
I'm absolutely not the best person out there when it comes to IDing figs. I find this all very frustrating. Reads is where Mucklestone got their Reculver but I've sent them 2 emails and have not heard back yet.
Mucklestone describes only as a long brown fig that is widely grown in the US.
I guess it's time to resend emails to them and Reads again.
Thanks for your time.

Look at Series C, close to the end, if you e-mail him, he may have more information on the variety, although he does sometimes take time to respond (weeks sometimes)
