i have some trees in the garage that are ready too go outside. some have broke bud and others are almost there. Can the trees be placed in direct sunlight as they come out of dormancy? Also, what about the young trees that i rooted months ago? The young trees have been sitting on all the south facing window sills since Nov/December. Can i place the trees in my portable greenhouse? I placed two 55gal barrels filled with water to help regulate the night temps.... as you can see in the pic, the cover is opaque so it really isn't direct sunlight or is it? i do have a shade cloth that i can drape over the the frame inside. the shade cloth is supposed to block 60% of the sunlight.....

I think you should be fine as long as they are just starting to come out of dormancy. Be careful and keep them in the shade for a little while if the leaves have started to fully open and stretch out a bit

If tree's from garage are in full leaf direct sun will set them back, if just buds cracking open and or leaves just emerging they will be fine otherwise partial shade is called for.

Garage heated or, unheated?  That's the question.  If heated, watch out...if unheated, watch the night temps. on the soft, new, growth.  The opaque covering on the portable greenhouse should serve your needs, and the barrels filled with water should keep the night temps. from plunging into the danger zone.  The night temps damaging soft growth will be your problem, so be wary.

I live in 7-b NYC, and my outside, fig trees trees have not yet broken dormancy, but yours in 6-b Mass. have.  ???????  How?  Why?  Be careful if trees are coming out of a too warm garage.

My outside trees haven't broken dormancy either Frank.  Glad to hear I'm not the only one.  Mid-80s the next 2-3 days here.

Frank, it’s a unheated detached garage constructed of cement blocks.

Not sure why the trees are starting to wake up now.  I know that my garage is in the sun all day and the temps in the garage never really drop below freezing.

But it does get warm in there even on a mild day. Its 70 F outside today!!!! WAHOO….!!   It’s been dropping down to 47 – 50F at night for the past few nights.

hey steve,
your plants would be coming out of dormancy earlier than inground trees because the potted soil warms up to air temp in the garage.
With in ground trees, the roots are still cold and that keeps the trees dormant.

The North-East Coast is at least a good month behind the rest of the warmer sections of the country.  So far, this "Spring" sucks out loud!  Today it's hot, but temps. expected to plunge way cooler by the weekend.  One step forward, and two steps back.

Stevin, your trees broke dormancy for a reason.  Probably warmer soil temps as suggested.  Don't worry, but keep an eye on the night temps.  Be prepared to do some quick moving if temps. dip too low.  That soft, new growth is tender, and it don't take much to nip those fresh, green leaves.

Good luck.

Frank
