We used to grow corn every year.  It got to be such a pain...takes a lot of room...shades a big area...takes a lot of water...that I finally decided the best variety is whatever shows up at our local farmers market.

My favorite is a yellow variety - 'Incredible'. It's got good corn flavor and is sweet... but is not one of the super sweet ones which are too cloying for me.

Figs take a long time.  I was thinking I want something that grows super fast.   There are fields of corn growing nearby but I've never seen them sell it at the farmers market so it must be grown for livestock.   I see them sprout up so quickly .   Where can I get these tasty corn kernels for growing?

By far, there are three varieties that will not disappoint....

Bodasious - very sweet and tender yellow corn...usually the first to get ready to harvest from the extended family corn patch. Similar to old "golden bantam" but much, much sweeter.
Silver King - very sweet yellow corn; larger than bodasious, more corn per ear; yield is really good if you are planning to put some in the freezer.  Comes in about 10 days after Bodasious.
Silver Queen - white corn favorite - comes in about the same time as Silver King.

I personally favor silver king simply for the yield.  We blanch it, cut it off the cob with a sharp knife (just the top of the kernels), then take the back of a butter knife and scrape it to get all the goodie.  We then put about 2.5 to 3 cups in a quart ziplock bag, carefully get all the air out and lay it flat in the freeze.  That way you can stack it very well.  Usually put up about 30-40 bags a year plus all you can eat for at least a month....starting around Mother's day or the week after.

Glutinous corn is the best, its chewy, not too sweet and tastes delicious, that's my opinion.

Bob,

Those are just stunning, gorgeous, like little beads of semi-precious stones. Makes one want to take on whole new hobby.

Is that corn for real?  Stunning.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.   I'm not good at narrowing down choices.  Might need to try them all.

Try the Bloody Butcher Corn - it's excellent and can grow 12 feet tall and have up to 3 ears, etc. We love this stuff in Virginia and it's an heirloom variety.

This site also sells heirloom popcorn.
