One can see some small emerging growth which can be airlayered just in case.

I see lots of new growth just starting as Martin does. Leave it alone for now it is making a comeback.

I think those pictures had some kind of filter to hype the colors. I just took new pics to show again that it looks pretty dry. But if you think it worth waiting, I definitely will. Thanks for the input, Andy

I have the same thing going on with one of my trees. The crack at the base. I keep trying to seal it and it just keep cracking higher up the trunk. I'm not sure how to stop it. It's still great under the bark. I don't see any signs of life. In your pics it looks you have some new growth.

my problem is always too little water... just looking at the pix, i would remove plastic cover and put it under porch or some where it will get rain protection. maybe the plastic cover is causing soil to retain too much moisture? the tree doesn't look dead.

Let the new growth develop and then air-layer. Later, even next season you can cut it off below the split and see what develops from there.
