Wow!  We transported one of our potted VdB's to the new property.  It is in extreme shock because it had grown roots into the ground, and we had to cut them.  Plus it's waay over 100 degrees outside.

It lost most of it's leaves, but they will grow back.  Once the leaves dropped, there was this beautiful breba hanging there, all ripe and pretty.  Of course I picked it, and it came off so easily!  Ripe!  Pure Ripe!

It's in my tummy.  Delicious!  Juicy.  Shades of sweet raspberry.  Oh My!!

Should have put a measuring stick next to it, but I have no clue which box those are in.  Moving is not easy.  Missing half or more of my kitchen stuff!!  This picture is taken on a small dessert plate, so you can imagine the size of this baby!

We are overwhelmed with so much to do at this house.  The Anna Apple is giving up tons of fruit, and a pie or two will be served on the 4th. 

You would crack up.  All new unfamiliar appliances.  I have to read each manual over and over to even cook bacon!!

Hope your figs are as good as the Violette De Bordeaux I just ate! 

Our other tree hasn't arrived yet.  It's the big one, and we will wait till fall or winter.  I should have lots of cuttings, and will advertise for trades in the fall.

Hi Suzi ! I'm so glad your VdB was delish. My Negronnes are heavy with tiny figs this year , but we are way behind in ripening- too cool this spring.

I can relate to the moving although it sounds like you are doing it all at once - we are doing it over a few years. Still one heck of a job !

Woman, that fig looks so much juicier than my PN figs.  Mine almost was like eating a really dry pomegranate.  Very little juice and lots of seeds.

Probable desired fig: Smith, St Jean, JH Adriatic, CddB, Gulbun, Pastilliere, Sucrette

Rooting:  Smith, CDDB--this pretty much means I have my fun tries (tho' important since they are truly desirable), and only interested for this year: Gulbun, BM, 187-25, or something wildly exotic or precious that nobody has any good reason to send me.

Luv it. My 2 trees are well loaded with main crop. One of the few very excellent figs that I yearn for more. Needs hot weather & a green house helps. Certainly Hardy Chicago, Sal's EL & Dark Portuguese are excellent tasting too. Any one knows how good tasting GINOSO is ?

Suzy, VdB is an excellent fig, but believe me, IMHO there are other varieties as good or better than VdB.
For example, a good RdB has nothing to envy to VdB, or Coll de Dama, better than VdB, or Baud's Sucrette, or Italia 258, or...
Of course, taste is a personal thing, and there are other different opinions, as good as or better than mine.
But is true, VdB is one of the best.

axier, i'll have to wait on those others to say if i like VdB better than the others or not. until then.. VdB is best to my taste. RdB is still thinking about putting on the figs, but i haven't seen one on it. i guess i'll have to wait till next yr. CdD has few on it. from what i have heard, it should be a great fig, but first yr figs are not the greatest. Sucrette and I-258.. i'll have to wait on them. i'm hoping Black Madeira and Figo Preto will change my mind when it comes to VdB being the best... only if it stops raining here.. oh.. and Calvert. now that will be something to look forward to.

Unfortunately RdB in my zone is nothing exciting, on the ordinary side for taste. Will give it a couple of
years. Now that I have a greenhouse, if trials with other variants like Natalina, Niagara Blk(Thks to Donor)
etc are better, RdB will be donated to another home.

Several of my figs are on the drip system at the other house (2 hour drive) waiting to be planted in ground here.  One of those is RdB, and I've never had a taste yet of that variety.  We have planted LSU Gold (currently loaded with baby figs), Paridiso, Adriatic, Panachee (trying to recover from chemical overspray), Unknown OC Hearty Flavor, and Blanche De Deaux Saisons.  In line for the next in ground planting are, VdB (in shock from the move), Strawberry Verte, Bourjosotte Gris, and Marseilles Vs. Black.

Axier, I am looking forward to comparing all the above and others in the future.

I don' to intend downgrade Vdb. It is an excellent fig and of my preferred.
What I mean to say is that there are other excellent figs out there and encouraging to try more varieties.
I know it! Like me, It is not necessary to encourage to you ;-))
Climate is a very important thing, an ordinary fig for me, can be an excellent fig in the sunny and warm Suzi's climate.
For example, I had LSU gold, it is sometimes mentioned like an excellent fig. It was very good looking and big sized fig, but very watery and plain taste, very sweet but plain. I removed it.
Who knows! It could be an excellent fig for you, Suzy.
But not only climate. For example, I have two RdB, both grafted in adult in ground trees and separated 20 mts between them, and one of them is much better than the other...
I don't know the reason, maybe the tree is excessively vigorous and because of it figs are more watery and split more easily.
if I only had grafted RdB in the worse tree. I would think now that RdB is an ordinary fig...

axier, i know what you mean :) cimate, and condition under when the fig ripens is very important factor in taste of the fig. my Paradiso Gene during the early summer last yr was amazing. but later summer when we were facing good amount of rain was just a ruin. similar with VdB, but VdB did much better, yet lacking in taste due to too much rain. this yr, i'm afraid, will also be a failure. way things are looking, we'll have rain for rest of the yr.
