I'm new to this so site I apologize if i'm not posting this where it belongs. We have 2 fig trees about 9 years old. We winter them in the basement giving them water occasionally so they don't dry out. My smaller tree unfortunately did dry out. The tree itself has no leaves or growth this yr but my branches are still flexible and when I cut the tip off a branch it doesn't look dead. Can this tree be dead? should I give up on it? Any advice you can give me i'd really appreciate. Thanks Cindy

Hi Cindy,

Welcome aboard! Sounds like it may still be alive. What varieties are your trees? Where did you get them from?  I'd suggest watering it, let it drain well and place it in the shade for a few weeks. Check the pot weekly for weight to see if it is dry or needs more or less water. Maybe the heat we've had hear in CT will warm it up and breathe some life into it. Good luck!

Welcome!
You should post some pics of your two trees. Does the dried out one have a little green on any buds?
These trees are fighters. I received two trees early this spring from a relative. I planted them months ago and buds just broke on the second one this week.

Welcome!  You posted in the right place.  I'd leave it in the sun and fertilize it.  Make sure the soil doesn't hold too much water so the roots don't suffocate.  Watch and pray.  A lot of fig trees are sleeping late this year.

I tried to post a couple pictures but they are too big to attach I will try again soon. I'm not 100% sure which kind they are. My figs are dark kinda like black mission. I don't have any green buds at all they are all dried up and brown. In the spring I brought my tree outside and repotted it with a larger pot and mostly new soil because my roots were alittle bound up and I have fertilized it 1 time this yr but still no change at all yet.

Hello Cindy,
Welcome to the forum community.
Don't give up on the tree! I have a few that are just now starting to re-grow from the soil line.

If the picture is on your hard drive and you are using MS Windows, open with Paint use the Resize, Percentage option, 30% is good and save with another name, then attach to the post.

How long has it been since the tree had any root work? How long has it been in the current container?

Welcome,,,, be patient and give it time. I wrote about my panachee's last week on here having the same problem and yesterday they finally put out a leaf on each tree. I sliced a piece of the bark and could see green so I knew it was still alive. A lot of trees this year are having the same problem , as long as you have green there's still hope. Just be patient.

 All my figs have been exposed to  FMV,some have it, some don't. It doesn't seem to bother them so it doesn't bother me.

I repotted it in the spring when I brought it out of the basement, gave it a bigger container and new soil hoping if it was still alive it would have more room to stretch out and more nutrients from new soil to help it recover.

I agree not to give up on the tree.  I have had trees not push out new growth for several months after the others had.  From experience, however I would be concerned the roots are constricted in the container.  I would expect a nine year old tree to be in a larger container.  Try stabbing a chopstick (or something similar) into the growing mix an inch or two away from the trunk.  With moderate pressure the chopstick should go through to the bottom of the container (or to the end of the chopstick).  If it is difficult to get the chopstick through, it is difficult for the roots to move water up the tree.
