I got this tree over the weekend and it's label Black Jack.  However, the fig doesn't, in my opinion, look just like the pictures I've seen of other Black Jack's.  As far as taste goes, it was a good fig but not great.  It was mildly sweet with a figgy flavor; a little bland actually.   I love the size of it but the smaller, LSU Tiger I had last week was soooo much better.

Thanks for the reassurance, Steve.  I'm new to this and I've read so much about mislabeling, I just want to be sure of what I have.  I have a Strawberry Verte also, but it is too young to bear fruit this year.

I'm sure others that have this one will chime in.  But that one might have needed another day or two on the tree.  Try that and see if it improves the flavor and sweetness.

Jules,

This one has to be super ripe (cracking skin) to get the full flavor profile according to the information I have been reading.

Thanks Meghan and Chris.  I thought that it might need another day or two on the tree but when I sliced it in half, around the plump end, a couple of spots looked as though it was overripe.  I will leave the others longer and see if that helps.

I have eaten a handful of Black Jacks from 3 different local nurseries.......they were ok.....looked bigger than black mission....but about 8 out of 10 lacked flavor......
they are probably good for making a pie with sugar added....

I've heard reports of good Black Jack from areas like Tucson, lots of heat and light. I'm not quite there on heat and light and mine end up like Brown Turkey, big and watery. The Strawberry Verte are smaller, dry and shrivel on the bush, and end up much sweeter and with much more concentrated flavor. They have a flavor much more like my best nectarines which are the best fruit I grow.

Thanks, Steve and Armando.  I'm going to give it a chance but I'm thinking this one will probably not be a keeper in the long run.  Since I am limited on space for growing trees, I would like to find few of the very best varieties to plant and maybe a few to grow in pots.
