Just for fun. If you could only ask for one variety what would it be? I would want a col de dame Gris to eventually try in ground in my area.

I look forward to hearing everyone's responses, and who knows maybe a generous member will make a wish come true.

Thanks to the generosity of two local forum members I have my first couple of young fig trees, and thanks to them and several members distributing their spare cuttings, I have about 12 varieties to root after Christmas. All I want now is my first home grown ripe figs :)

At first I was going to say I can't think of anything at all...really.  Then I remembered a beautiful red fig I've only seen in pictures.  Maybe it will be found here in the USA.  I mostly hope that everything I have grows well for me in 2014.

HAHAHA...I was thinking the same thing as I read down the list.  Someone needs to breed a fig and name it 'World Peace' so we can wish for it and actually get it!

Hum, what would the attributes of a fig have to be to get that name....

1) When you taste it you are satisfied and want for nothing other than to share it with your neighbors.

2)...

Well, I wish to find a strain of big fig that would ripen here.
I know where there are three such strains at three different places. I'll have to have Santa Claus to ask for cuttings .
Those figs look like pears / half the size of a pear williams .
I did not know that such figs did exist !
So Santa Claus ... Go for cuttings for me !
Don't ask for the name of those varieties ... I have no idea, because unfortunately, I haven't seen them in any nurseries ... One of those hidden heirlooms strains certainly...

A giant, juicy, early ripening even in cold climate, black, amazing flavor, closed eye, sweet and how did someone say..."slap your knees good" fig!  Uh which variety is that...Nero, Ital 258?  :)
Merry freaking Christmas everyone!

I do have a wishlist but I can skip that to another year if we could have a warm spring and long hot summer and warm fall in 2014 and no raccoons since they totally defeated me in 2013 and caused havoc coming in as a family of 4.

Ottawan, I have found Rottweilers to be the answer to raccoons...

As for my Santa's wish list...it is hard to narrow down to one, but I guess it would be St. Rita because of all the wonderful things that I have read about it. And I also like the story that goes along with it.

James -- I'm with you.  I have a "fig crush" on that Livano Greek.  That is just one good looking fig.
It hit me just now why I am so attracted to it -- the coloration looks just like some ripe mangos I've seen, with that yellow/orange/red transition.  Yum!

Alan,
I agree with you. I have only recently been able to start paying forward the generosity of members who gifted me cuttings, but that is what it is all about.

I also think we serve a vital role in preserving these varieties. Particularly the ones that have the best flavor. I have other fruits including an heirloom southern apple orchard. These varieties are great for various uses and can't be found in stores. Same as figs.

Thanks for the info, and it is sad that both are under attack in Malta by the fig tree borer (susa). Hopefully I'll find a cutting of a Farkizzan.
