So I've been trying to get some info on this variety as I must somehow be connected or related to it as my last name is the same, minus the e.

Who has it and what can you tell me about it's performance and fruit production? And obviously if anyone has any cuttings, I'm interested.

I would change the name to Madeira and ask for cuttings after :)

I believe the name means little prince or king in France. I'm waiting for my royalty check in the mail any day now....

I have one and it is fruiting right now....... Look at my profile picture ...... I don't know how it tasted so far ,since I just start growing fig tree in here, I used to have unk Italian fig tree back then in Canada...... I post the taste later on when the fruit is ripe......

The hunt goes on....I was outbid on this tree, and I have been searching for this variety for quite some time. I'm hoping someone may have another Violette Dauphin tree or cutting for sale. My family name is Dauphin and my grandparents came to the US from France so I believe there must be some type of connection to this variety. It would be great to grow this variety with my children and when they are older pass it along to their family. Anyone?

My neighbors last name is Dauphin but he doesn't grow figs.

Figtree Dauphine is a big grower . Do you have them in pots ?
I know from one that is six meters high - Don't call me to go fetch the figs :)
The figskin is black with green to the opposite of the eye and strawberry-color inside. the tree tend to rip the figs while they are grouped - like climbing roses do. It does often ripe its figs, but takes to much place for me.
I didn't taste them - it wasn't my tree and they looked similar to the dark ones of my "from the italian".

In french, the futur king ( the first son of the king still alive) was called dauphin ... as well are Dolphins called dauphin . Both are mammals :) ... Do you prefer water or chasing ? ... just joking :)

Mike, I think the common story is that 'Dauphine' was King Louis 14th's favorite fig from Quintinie's royal figuierie at Versailles.

That said, apparently there are different varieties named 'Dauphine.' Baud's site seems to say Dauphine is a common type (SYN: Rouge d'Argenteuil), but another website said Dauphine is San Pedro type like Desert King. Yet another said Violette Dauphine is from Afghanistan. 

Apparently, Quintinie wrote a 1400-page book about gardening which includes a discussion of figs. I'm curious if he gives specific names of cultivars.

Sammy - From what I am told, there are relatives in Canada so I suppose there is a possibility.

Rick - Yes, from what I have read, King Louis favorite was Dauphine, which is interesting. Now that you mention there are a few called Dauphine, one will never know I suppose which it was?

Jds - yes, I'm growing in pots but would put one in the ground if I could find this variety, I have enough room. I got in quite a bit of trouble for school kid calling me Dolphin back in the day. I just had to set them straight. :)

@ jdsfrench, I don't know if because the weather or something else. The dauphine fig tree in my country is the fig tree that hard to have a ripe fruit. My tree have about 20 so fruits, but after the fruits start big enough. Then they drops....... Some of my friend said that character of the tree. Maybe after 2 or three year, then the fruits won't drop. But I'm not sure that is supposed to be like that. IMO.

Well infact, the fig from the dauphine fig tree are rond in shape ...
