Cyprus is a very diverse island , with it's rich history and culture.... it has 7 Castles... Othello was written with Cyprus having in mind, The oldest Coper mines are in that island, hence the name (Cuprus). if you chemically analyze oldest coins from Roman and Greek empires they are made of Cyprus coper. Lusignans (roman princes) ruled Cyprus for 500 years...

haven't looked for them yet, I will tell my sisters to get hold of my cousin, he's a chief councilor of agriculture there one some village I guess, kidding, but he would find out what varieties they grow there and considered local of origin. would be interesting to find out.

oh the coolest fact about Cyprus.. it's "other" name or shell I say... SYNONYM (LOL) is Island of Venus... the god of beauty was washed to the eastern shores of Paphos. She left footsteps leading to the nearby mountains where found a waterfall and washed herself off of sea water with fresh water. Under the waterfall,where she stood, there is a huge Conch shell with her footprints in it... you see that symbolic scenic picture in many Roman and Greek paintings and frescos Aphrodite' naked standing in a half shell with her marble body and long reddish brown mediterranean hair.. eating a FIG...no, kidding! (scratch the last one)

I went to Cyprus and it is a beautiful place. Had a couple of figs there and they were good. The were small and black. Don't recall what variety they were.

I was in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus a few years ago (the Non-EU side). Awesome weather, and had figs off various trees that were around. The people were very nice too...

Last summer a friend visited a house for a job, and they had a huge fig tree loaded with figs. They were from Cyprus and they brought the tree from cyprus years ago. Figs were large green with tints of purple. He brought me some cuttings, and I"m in the process of rooting them. Hope to have some to share in the near future.

Bass, that's the famous local fig of Cyprus, overall green with tint of purple, large to medium in size, small (>1cm) stalk, small to medium eye, inside is dark pink (most probably caprified) full pulp, the meat is of medium thickness, thicker towards the neck, has non to ver short neck, very juicy, sometimes can be watery because of lack of sun, otherwise sweet. tree grows to be 4 meters but can be very wide if you let, up to 8-10 meters is easy to handle for the tree without support. Best to eat fresh because they are showy fruit. Because of the medium size eye, some can sour due to insect invasions, you have to harvest early in the morning.
