that depend. i keep my cuttings in 1 gal for a yr then bare root, change soil mix and up pot. i think most others up pot as soon as the roots circle inside the pot. i manhandled the roots... beat on it to loosen up the soil, by 1 yr, they are tough enough, they won't die on me.

Pete thats a thing of beauty a genuine Ischia Black, sure hope ours make it out of dormancy as its been harsh winter and still
has its grips here with 5-8 expected starting tonight.

martin, i do have another, Unk Ischia Black. i think the original source is jason (satellitehead ?). USDA/UCD is much cleaner so far this yr. last yr, there were good number of problems and leave didn't look too good. but this yr, so far anyway, the leaves are very clean.

Unk Ischia Black is having usual early spring misshapen leaves. so far the leave do not look same, but juvies sometimes have that issue, doesn't represent mature leaf form. altho.. in most cases, i think they do..

Here is matching fig whole and cut open right afterwards.
As you can see comparing this post with post #12 the difference between the 2 interiors.

A day or two can waiting can add to the pleasure depending on person eating them.
Some folks like then somewhat firm some like them well ripen .

my tree will be going into 2nd yr. maybe i'll taste one or two. all 3 USDA/UCD dark fig's of choice will be getting some serious fertilizer this yr.

Same. Just fertilized some this morning. Not just UCD ones, but all the ones in the back yard.

I want 'too many' figs! Not just a taste here and there.

While I have recently rooted UCD BI from a kind donor who originally got it from UCD, the faux BI from Jon is doing well. I am hoping to get lots from that variety (more of VdB type).

Pino i found what Herman mentioned to me in 2009 and pasted it in another thread.


Noss and Gina this was conveyed to me by Herman back in 2009



Dieseler:Black Ischia Name can't be found in Italy,because Phillip Miller,An English nursery man,imported Four cultivars from around Napoly,and Island of Malta. << Edit: Herman meant Island of Ischia as he corrected that later in thread.>>

As he was making his way back to England He lost The Tags,so,when they fruited He Named them new names according to color and where it found the trees(island of Malta). <<He meant Ischia>>
All Ischias,Black green,brown and white,are names given by Miller,and not the original names the figs will be called in Italy.
So that is why ,is hard to find them now.

They are thre but under their normal name.
I think,Black Ischia is mostly Found under the name Black Fig,Or Fico Negro,or Nero.
This is how it should be looked after in My opinion.

I found an Italian online book that has 6 figs from Island of Ischia;
 

fico di'inferno (fig from hell)

fico colena

fico natalino nero (black fig ripens for Christmas)

fico pennese

fico trojano

fico paradiso

Hi Pino - Thanks goes to Herman i just passed on the information he mentioned and i like to
add he is one of most if not the most knowledgeable forum member when it comes to figs in my opinion.

I see fico Natalino in above list you mention, here in yard we have whats called Vernino .
Natalino, Pasquale, Vernino may or may not be of the same with different names i do not know.

Sorry Pete, fico d'inferno may not be a fig at all.  It looks like a castor plant that produces that deadly poison.
But it does resemble a fig somewhat and maybe thus the name?
