The only thread a search on "diverticulitus" turned up was this one from 2011

Searched for it because I have had more than my share of diverticulitus episodes.  For those not familiar with the word, basically some food particle(s) get stuck in a pocket in the intestines, get infected and inflamed, swelling shut the waste path.  It can rupture and kill you if not treated in time as it almost did to me with my first episode.

I kept drinking juices and taking laxative, thinking it would make me go but after four days found myself in the ER just moments away from it rupturing.

Now there are comments in the old thread that small seeds need not be a worry.  I'm not sure about that but to each their own.  Is there anyone with update info since that old thread?

I ate three dried black mission figs yesterday, thinking perhaps the first one I got from the bag a few days ago may have been a spoiled and dried fig since reading someone else's account of eating a bad tasting black mission.

The ones I picked from the bag were, for lack of description, more plump looking than the rest and I have to say they tasted much better than the first one I ate.

Getting to the point now.  Sure felt this morning as if I was in the beginning of another episode and wondered if it was the fig seeds.  The feeling has passed and I am fine now but wondering.

Charlie, I am so sorry you have this.  I have it too, but years go by before I get it again.  I know it will happen, but I do enjoy life and the beautiful home JD and I share.

I will pray for you.  Not a fun thing.  Been there a lot of times.

Charlie, it doesn't sound good, better be safe than wondering if....check by Google and consult your doctor.

I work in food service and we have plenty of people on these types of diets. Some people can tolerate tomatoes and have no problem but then strawberries will cause an episode. its usually best to check with your doctor though and try not to over do it. I did just google it and a few sites said figs are good to eat, then another site said to avoid them.

I got the same thing, had a minor attack just 2 days ago after 2 years without one. I'm not sure I buy the seeds and nuts advice.  My brother also has it (and 2 sisters and Mother) and he eats nuts literally every day.  I eat a lot of cucumbers and tomatoes as my harvest comes in, which started a month ago.

However, one of my docs said try a small amount and see if you if feel ok.  I would try again if I were you and see, but I know what you mean - I was in the hospital once for it.  The doc thought the cat scan or x ray or whatever it was showed a ruptured intestine.  Thankfully it was a false alarm.

BTW, my experience has been if as soon as I feel it coming on, I stop eating solid food and drink *lots* of water, it clears itself.

Same here.  Took awhile but finally narrowed my episodes down to sweet potatoes and almonds being the two worst things for me to eat.  Made sure one of my fig trees was seedless (Mary Lane) just in case.  I have a Vita-Mix that is used nearly every day.  If I discover that I love figs as much as ya'll do and if the seeds are an issue I will pulverize and drink them with a straw lol

Sweet potatoes?  Well that's not on any of the docs' lists!

My aunt in NY was told by her doctor that eating any type of hard seeds (sesame seeds as an example) could irritate her bowels. So her diet consists of food that is seedless.
I hope you feel better. I'm almost sure that seedless fresh figs would not cause the same problems that dried figs might with their hard seeds.

I think the sweet potatoes fall into the category of high fiber foods that can lead to bezoars, probably another strange word to most.  Persimmons also fall into this category.  They never sent me to the hospital but sure can lead to some pain in that same area.  I love them but hardly ever eat them any more.

Drinking coca cola may help dissolve bezoar obstructions or so I have read, never tried.

To all those affected by this, sorry that you have to endure such agony, but at least you seem to be aware of what triggers it and; hopefully, you'll continue to keep it under control.
