I think one of the hardest aspects of propagation is waiting for the right time to root. We all come to the end of fig season and want more fig time. Winter sets in and the yearning to start cuttings runs strong. We must remember that once these cuttings take root we have to deal with them. Unless you have a greenhouse or a lot of space and lighting to baby your cuttings for the next 4 months resist the urge.
I root so that after about a month of artificial lighting they are ready to go outside. If you don't, the hassle of keeping them properly going can take its toll.
Patience is truly a virtue.

Hey Coop, I feel you Brother! I said to myself  "I don't think I want to start cuttings this Late Fall or early Winter" ....But  I can't help myself, it's like I am being dragged into this mess, but you know what? "I love it" and You do too ! Or we would not be fooling with these fruits that we dearly love. I have already about 42 cuttings potted up in cups and going to do about 50  more, and I haven't even started up my new Cloner yet! I know the work that comes with it freezing temps, watering, losing plants for too much watering etc. Good Luck my Friend, maybe we will make it through this Winter!

Ahhh Frank, you talked me into buying a Clone King 64, thanks. They preach that no dome should be used, their practice with no dome has resulted in a much higher success rate than with a dome method. Are you using a dome?

Hey Wayne, no, I don't have a dome or need one! A buddy of mine uses this Cloner for another type herb,if you know what I mean....And he says that he's tried cuttings with and without the dome and got a whole lot better results using NO Dome! Good Luck Wayne!

Ok I'm convinced.
So much better than rooting in soil or peat.
One question, what gph rated pumps are you guys using?
Some 400 gph units are rated at 20 watts....cheap electric bill.
I will be building mine soon.

Vinny, for me yes. If your method works and you don't have gnats to fight, then keep the one you brought to the dance. But for me, year after year, I kept loosing cuttings to gnats. I've got prize cuttings with mega roots inside my cloner. Now, that I have the cloner under T5 lights, all I have to do is replace the cloner with newly potted plants. Now, I will have gnats to fight once they root but at least I know I have mega roots under a cutting. The new leaves will fall off after I repot them but the cutting becomes a tree in 3 months of winter!

To fight the gnats, I set out 3 watering cans with 2.5 gallons of water each with 1 tablespoon of mosquitos bits and one mosquitos dunk. Plus I spray the cutting with physan 20 daily. I water the newly potted cutting every 3 days with liquid fertilizer and the critter water..

What is the logic in creating more spaces to grow cuttings in the smaller container and less in the larger?  Are you planning on leaving the cuttings in the larger container longer?  Perhaps growing full plants?  Can't wait to see both in action.  For me, purchasing the switch was the most expensive component at $65.  1 min on, 4 min off.

Well I just got back from lowes. Bought the 300 gph that is adjustable 175-300 gph.
Should work....
Time to start building.
Black 27 gallon container with the yellow squares in the top on sale for $8 at lowes, yee haw.

The larger cloner is home made and the smaller one is not. No intent or logic to the sizes, most of us build the home made ones with readily available components The Turbo Klone is custom made. Logically smaller would be better. I won't keep the cuttings in longer in the big guy. It's just the way I built it and I already had that tub.

This has been so much fun.
First trip to lowes the same named container had diagonal diamonds.....
Turned around went back to lowes. A simple top exchange for the ones with squares and on
my way home again.
Couldn't stop there so I made up my sprayer assembly.
No pump mounted yest, need 3/4 x 1/2 adapter and I can test.
I mounted my legs to support the sprayer assembly and will act as a baffle while the pump is
starting up.
The pump I got was 300gph max but adjustable down to 175gph.
Too much? Not enough? We'll see.
The 180 degree pattern of the spray heads are back to back for a full circle pattern.
I can not wait to try it!

I was going to use that same tote (yellow lid?), but read that it leaked like a sieve once the pump was installed.  I purchased a 54 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck tote after reading that they didn't leak - it did too, but less.

What I ended up doing was fashioning a 'shower curtain' out of black plastic 4 mm  sheeting to hang off the lid of the tote so that it falls between the lid and the sprayer/manifold.

It seems to be working well.  Unfortunately, I really filled the first one with water and ended up somehow cracking/breaking the tote - water, water, everywhere.  Probably just too much weight/stress.

I filled the second tote (didn't replace the lid) to above the pump level plus an extra level for evaporation/spillage to protect the pump.

I used Gorilla tape to hold the curtain in place.  I also needed to tape the tote handles since they had cutouts.

I have the tote resting on a seedling heat mat.  Most of my cuttings have roots/initials.

Hi Andy.
I just bought self sticking door weatherstripping.
I'm going to install it in the lid groove.
I also bought 10 wing nuts and washers with 1/4-20 bolts.
They will be used to put equal pressure on weatherstripping.
that should seal up my box.
I'll test it today with no holes cut in the squares.

Thank you, Yes Gnats are really a big problem for me as well, in fact they seem to thrive in our temperate climate. I've noticed that they are not much of a problem if rooting is done inside a greenhouse around mid-spring. 
I've found a cloner from an online greenhouse supplier, they are a really good company

The whole science of rooting with the cloners sure has piqued my interest. I was wondering, I see most of you use the neoprene collars. Has anyone tried using the EZ clone coco collar in thier unit? I would think using them would result in less root damage when potting up.

No Dave, I haven't. Besides, the roots produced from these cloners are not fragile. They're super strong....no joke!

 Well, I'm up and running.
The weather stripping sealed up the lid perfect.
Added a drain petcock, no leaks anywhere.
Can't even hear it running, you have to feel the lid to feel water spraying underneath.

I made my own root cups by cutting down a larger cup and hot glue back together.
Used Styrofoam plugs cut same size as the holes.
I have the right cups coming from a supplier but this gets me running now.

  Welcome to the world of Aeroponics, Doug!  Good work on your cloner...

you never know, you might prefer to leave your set-up as is, even once the net-cups arrive;  I purchased the 'right cups' from the dope supply house here in town as I was collecting parts for my build, but I found that the plastic shot-glasses that are sold in Walley-World's alcohol department are half the price, stronger, and work much better than the net cups... so, the net-cups are just sitting here gathering dust.

  Do you have the neoprene collars heading your way?  That is one area that it pays to use the original design.  And, they're only like $9 for a full sheet of them.

  Now that this project is under your belt, the next logical step is to combine your photovoltaic hobby with this one; divorce your operation from the grid.

  I had accomplished something similar...  I originally constructed a full aquaponics system, with a battery bank and photovoltaic cells powering a 12V bilge pump in my tubs (I was raising lettuce instead of figs then).  The plants were naturally fed from waste water pumped from five tomato gondolas (the large fiberglass tanks that haul tomatoes from the field.

  These gondolas were housing for my freshwater lobster aquaculture production.  The veggie waste from the cloners was cycled through the lobsters as feed, so it was really quite self-contained.   The only part that I hadn't thought through was the wife's feelings...    she ultimately asked that I eliminate the lobster production, as she felt that it was taking over our lives.  (A happy wife means a happy life...)  Luckily, an aquaculturalist in San Diego bought me out, so I didn't lose anything in the liquidation.   Oh, well....  water under the bridge.  

  I am going to implement your weatherstripping addition...  my bins sealed perfect for the first half of their lives, but now are leaking a bit.  (Between the lot of us, we'll make one whole person!)

The weather striping works great. My pump is super strong. How strong is it? It can suck a golf ball through a garden hose!

Hey Dennis....If I am just wanting to root my Fig cuttings, with my Cloner Machine (Clone king 36), does it matter if I have a growing light above them or not? They are  in a average Room with lighting ? Thanks so much, for introducing us to this way of rooting! Any help will be greatly appreciated...     : )

Frank, I would be guessing if answer your question. I've never used my cloner without grow lights. I can say this......The lights do add some heat and the water is warm too. I never tried it without grow lights.

Does it hurt the cuttings to turn these cloners off a couple hours?
Can I leave it off just at night while I sleep??
I'm learning to trust my machine, but I'm not quite there yet. :)

edit, Blue, I already have 360 watts of solar panel's for the house and I charge 8 - 6v golf cart batteries, and 45 watts of solar panels for my 12x20 barn .
We run the 2 tv's, stereo, xbox, dvr and surveillance cameras all day and night.
My electric bill for a all electric 4 bed room house has been less than $70 for the last 4 months.
It can super easy handle 20 watts from the pump. My LED I built is 200 watt 24,000 lumen and uses 188 watts.
I will be finishing a 150 watt led grow light soon using 2-50 watt warm white chips and 1 cool white 50 watt LED chip.
That should help cut power usage a wee bit more. Free power is killer, after the initial cost to set it up..

My T24 cloner came today. Attaching the fan was hard but finally got it.

Now I am waiting on the cycle timer.

Now I can play with the big boys. :)

Maybe if it all works out I will build one of the custom ones like you guys have. I'm just not keen on having to work with 5 or 10 gal of water indoors.

Dennis, what I was thinking, when we root with moss and coir in shoe boxes etc., some of my best roots were when cuttings were rooted in a Dark closet?? The only time I put them under grow lights was after they rooted?.Does this make sense? ..... Thanks!

Doug,

I would NOT turn the machine off overnight.  The fragile roots will go bone dry and likely not survive after a few nights.

You could put a washing machine overflow pan beneath the cloner.

Normally, the risk is that the spray will leak - and not all of the water will be expelled overnight; in my case, I filled my tub up ALL the way and the weight of the water (I think) caused the base to crack - slow leak until I started to empty it out.  I discovered a new use for all of our beach towels in December.  Fortunately I'm working in the unfinished part of the basement and didn't ruin anything (I hope).


Can someone explain where/how to use the weatherstripping?  Where does it go - on the outside lip between the lid and sidewall?

Here's a picture of my cloner.  I have more cutouts I can do for additional figs, but didn't order enough netpots and plugs to completely fill it out (since I was going to use the yellow-lid Lowe's tub).

I have the 4 foot light going on top, but I'm really not trying to light up the cuttings - I'm hoping to get roots long before I get budding.  I lost a lot of figs in humidity domes with Root Riot when they budded long before they had roots.

I put the weatherstripping on the lid so it will seal right at the top inner edge of the tub.
The weather stripping will go nicely around corners if you remove the protective paper to
stick it down.



Thanks Andrew, that is what I will do.
After running 4 hours last night I turned it off.
Started it up this morning and will keep a eye on it today.
I'm starting to trust that no unknown problems will show up.

I also used zip ties at all the holes around the sealing edge. just snugged em up as a reassurance
nothing can move.

I drilled a hole in the top of my back side of my bucket for my wire, then cut a slit with a hacksaw.
Twisted the plastic to get cord in hole and sealed cut and around cord with hot glue. Its waterproof, and convenient.

I was unsure what tap to buy and I'm cheap.
I found a bolt with the same diameter and threads matched up
so I took a dremel and cut a slot in the bolt then tapered the tip.
I drilled my holes a bit small and put the bolt in my cordless drill.
A bit of pressure and it started cutting threads just perfect.
All the screw in heads fit nice and tight.

Doug, I'm glad that worked for you. It didn't for me. I tried 3 times before making a trip to HD. Taps and dyes are hard to find these days. Lowes down here quit stocking them due to a lack of sales. I use to have a huge tap and dye set when I was in high school. Back in my engine rebuilding days.
