This tree or trees is/are growing right by the side of a city street on an empty lot.  These are lower leaves but the upper leaves are not lobed.  I did not see any figs but didn't have time to really look.  Maybe these are not even part of the whole tree since they appear to be suckers around the base.

It also looks very similar to an oakleaf hydrangea.

It looks to me what my family in zone 7 use to call a cut paper tree.  It grew fast and was sort of a junk tree.  The tulip tree leaf is smooth.  The cut paper tree leaf is rough and if I remember correctly, much lighter underneath.  Been a long time since I've seen one.

I see those around, just a weed.

Alan, your pic is a Tulip Tree (Liriodendron), I have seedlings all over my yard courtesy of the big one next door.

Yeah, pretty trees but they drop branches almost every time it storms here. Compost or firewood, no waste.

Ok thanks for the comments.  There's this one and another street with a bunch of them with no figs on either.  Leaves sure had me crankin my head around lol.

You know you love figs when everything starts looking like a fig leaf. :).. I was walking out earlier this year and stumbled upon an entire patch of figs. I was ready to egt down on my knees and thank mother nature for all the fabulous figs.. Then I realized they were all under an old oak tree. False alarm. :)
