My first fig from a 2 year old tree. Didn’t put out any figs the first year. Nice rich taste even though it wasn’t fully ripe. John had 2 trees same fig. His big one had to be the tallest tree I’ve seen in north Jersey, I estimate 30 – 35 feet tall.

John was old and a little strange. First time I met him he was the nicest guy in the world. He said I could eat all I wanted, come back anytime. I had some figs but they weren’t quite ready. He said I could come back and do an air-layer. He says don’t even ring the bell just do whatever you have to do. I go back about 2 weeks later after several days of heavy rain but his car is not there. I do the air-layer and gorge myself on figs. Lots of splits. I’m just about to leave and John shows up. I’m not sure he remembers me. He is clearly agitated because I’m in his backyard. I try to explain but he doesn’t remember it that way. I apologize and I get out of there.

5 weeks later I’m not looking forward to going back for the air-layer. Over the next couple of days I pass his house few times until I don’t see his car. I go in the backyard and the air-layer is gone.  I took some cuttings and got the hell out of there quick.
