that looks great. mine survived last yr, and it started growing this yr, still about a foot tall and growing side way. need to repot and see if it does better next yr and give me some figs.

Is it like any of the Mount Etna types in flavor?  Or, if you have had one, a Bourjasotte Gris?

Shah, it is very far in taste and looks from Mt Etna type figs. I've not had a Bourjasotte Gris.

Thanks, I asked that because the leaves sometimes looked like Etna types, and the fruit looks much like smaller BG.

This has been a very vigorous grower for me, both trees that I started earlier this year are about 3-4' tall.  Hope to get fruit next year!

JD, doing good! I took a job that has me abroad so I havent been able to indulge in my passion. I however now have nearly 3 acres that i am getting ready to lazer level and set up an irrigation system. I hope to get a good 10-30 trees after that.. Good news is that I have more dates than I can eat!

I agree. The leaves on the second are similar. The leaves on the tree in the first image are finger-like and quite distinct.

Barbra's daughter is considering New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.  We made a tour through the campus in Socorro during spring break at the end of a trip through southern NM.  I was almost back to Albuquerque when it clicked in my brain where I had just been.  I should have kicked myself for that.  I was back in NM last week but did not have enough time to meet fig people.  Jose, if you are in town on my next trip, I'd like to pay another visit.

JD, the leaves on both of my trees are the same.  Both of my photos above are of the same tree.  The second photo has some leaves that were damaged by wind.  Both were started from cuttings obtained directly from Jose (loslunasfarms) who discovered the tree.  I also got CdD Grise from Jose at the same time but that did not grow for me.  I do see that the leaves of mine appear different than Jose's original photos at http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg0900345017538.html?24 so maybe he can explain what's happening.  I am quite careful in my labeling so I know that isn't an issue.  I imagine I'll have ripe fruit in a month or so.

Below is a photo of leaves from both of my trees.  The leaf on the left is from the same tree as photographed above and the leaf on the right is my second specimen.

Thanks for the photo clarification Harvey. Your leaves are much more finger-like than I have seen on Socorro Black. Not sure that Jose can reconcile it. Nevertheless, I am interested in seeing photographs of your fruit and your description of its taste. Please keep us posted.

My Socorro Blk. I think this variant needs lots of heat to ripen. In my zone,
its taste is average.

I won one of these from Harvey on E Bay and am very excited about it. It has a bit of FMV but is growing well. The leaves are really crazy looking on the young starts.

JD, Please see below. I dont know how I could have messed up the cuttings but if I did (i only have one set of cuttings out at a time and tripe check), I have a stack of Socorro black cuttings in my refer at home i believe so I can send u some additional ones. Im trying to build an orchard made of this variety. I may even have an extra layer.. Paully, you are right, Socorro is a very hot and dry climate so it does great with figs. JD with your climate I can only imagine. Remind me as I will be heading back to the US in a 1.5 weeks. This looks like my Vasilika Sika, almost spot on or my ABQ1BB or Socorro 4. Both are excellent in taste with the Sika having a red interior and the ABQBB having a pink amber color.

James, Im in and out of the country but I will be back in NM for 3 weeks from end of July to mid Aug as I profession is now in the Petrol Industry overseas. You are more than welcome at my home, and yes, my orchard. James, NMIMT was an excellent school for my wife and I. I have more internship offers and about 5 job offers upon graduation with my first degree. I had the problem that I had tell companies that I had to stop the job search because I didnt have any more time to fly all over the country and interview.. My second degree (my MSci) I had 3 job offers. NMIMT is known for being a good buy and the school is very small so you really dont get lost in the college things, everyone there has very good scores here so it is hard in that most everyone there has excelled in math and sciences.

No need for alarm nor to send more cuttings. I am confident in what you did, what Harvey did, and what I have. I believe this is simply a difference of climate and other variables that cannot be correlated.

Concerning the tree I have from you, the leaves match what you called Socorro Black, they also match the images of the Socorro Fig on your Photobucket page, they match what Paully posted in this thread, and some of the newer leaves match with both Harvey's photo and the Socorro 4 on your PhotoBucket page. I posted the leaves from my tree in an earlier thread (Socorro Black 2011 & 2012). The images in that thread show some finger-like leaves but not as prevalent as shown in Harvey's image or your Socorro 4 images. So if I raised concern, it was not intentional but a simple observation of the plethora of finger-like leaves on Harvey's tree.

We all know that climate, age, potted versus grounded, watering, wasp, sun, owner neglect (mine) each impact the leaves, fruit, growth, etc.

Harvey and others growing Socorro Black,
Once you get fruit, please post photographs. I did not realize how many people were growing Socorro Black. If you have the heat, get and grow it. It is a very good fig.

I first admired this fig fruit since day-one him (source) Jose showed it off on this FF.
I did get one, but unfortunately, I recently lost it before it even fruited.

I also remember a pic of a MOSTER  log (same fig) that Jose managed to root.

I think it looks very good because it looks very good. How did it taste?
It looks as if the shape, size, and open cavity are a match. The skin color is darker than I have seen, however, it will be different in your climate for a variety of reasons. 

I have had a few Socorro Black figs. They were very good as usual and the slight acidity was good. No photos for a variety of reason. The primary reason is lack of figs to photograph due to the squirrels - they have devoured so many ripe figs as well as unripe Socorro Black (and JH Adriatic) figs or just pulled them off.

JD, it had only mild acidity and maybe it tasted a bit sweeter than the brix indicated.  I'm not creative enough to associate the flavor with any particular fruits.

It sure does look like a fine tasting fig. My start didn't put on any figs this year but it does have very nice looking leaves and was a pretty good grower despite us not really having a summer here in NY this year.

Mike, same situation as Johnnie's. Everything I sold or traded came from two identical mother trees. Both have a lot of fruit and I should have a lot more to pick in the next month or two.

I'm still not really sure since the leaf form doesn't look right.  I'll say it is a very good fig but I can't just say with certainty that it is Socorro Black because of the leaves.

Leaves seem to be haunting me lately, LOL

I had communicated with one collector with Wuhan, for instance, since some of my cuttings developed into trees with lobed leaves and others looked like mulberry leaves.  This collector showed me their tree with very distinct differences on different branches.  That could have been what happened here, I don't know.

I picked another fig from the other tree around noon today and will post the photo later.  I picked it about two days early in comparison to the one above and it still had areas of green on it but it was quite soft.  It was more acidic but still quite good.

I'd like to bump this thread just to get folks thoughts on my figs in posts 33 and 44.  I tend to think my two trees aren't actually Socorro Black but I don't want to rely on just leaf shape for the decision as I've seen too many weird things (plus even Jon reported how he had a Vista with "wrong" leaves for four years).  Thanks for your thoughts.

Mine is growing well to have FMV so bad, I just got it spring of last year and it's almost 3 ft tall now.
