I received a generous gift of LaRadek cuttings earlier this year.  Apparently, an email indicated they were LaRadek BT and rare, etc.  The cuttings arrived only with Laradek written on the bag.  I searched the forum here and saw a discussion of LaRadek EBT (English Brown Turkey) and labeled them as that.  The friend that gave them to me is now upset with me for other reasons and brought up this issue as well but hasn't told me what the difference is.  Can someone please explain?

Thanks,

Harvey

Harvey ,
I think there is only one variety with the LaRadek name attached and is considered possibly a strain of English Brown Turkey.
I don't think there are 2 versions of this .

Thanks, Kerry.  I appreciate it.

Are you, by chance, growing it?

I saw it posted there is an EBT and a BT, no idea the difference.

Edit: Laradk (sic) EBT is not LaRadek BT is what I've got.

Harvey , I was given a small plant this season.
Kelby , I have missed reading quite a few posts , so thanks for bringing that up , I'll have to look for that post you mention.
Didn't mean to mislead Harvey , I just hadn't heard of the fellow it came from having more than that one fig that was sought after.

That was recently posted over the new forum. I know nothing about either except LaRadek BT is R's fave and the Laredk (?) EBT is supposed to be extra hardy. That was spelling I saw...not sure if a typo.

I just found the discussion in the other forum.  Rafed said the word "Laredk" was a typo and he should have written that "Laradek EBT" (written as "LaRadek EBT" in a thread here).  There is no description of Laradek BT other than the thread on the other forum.  Seems that with an unusual name like this there would be some connection but maybe not.  Who knows?

Harvey, if you can post a picture of the leaves we can confirm if they match LaRadek EBT leaves.

Kerry, which one are you growing, Laradek BT or Laradek EBT?

Greg, do you have Laradek EBT?  I'd like a cutting from anyone that has it from a reliable source.

Here is a photo I just took of my Laradek BT started from cutting on April 17, 2014.  It is about 4' tall and is forming fruit which may ripen here still this year.

Harvey, I know of only one LaRadek fig. The term BT and EBT are interchanged but I am sure that they refer to the same fig. I received mine from a reliable source. I will post photos of my leaves over the next day or so but they resemble your leaves. Here are photos of one of my LaRadek Figs from last season. The bottom three photos compare the Bayernfeige Violetta fig from this year. Both varieties have some similarities, but there is a difference in taste. The LaRadek EBT has a sweet, fruity fig taste whereas the Bayernfeige Violetta has a sweet, cantaloupe flavor in my opinion. My personal preference is the taste of the LaRadek. Other growers may differ. Both are abundant croppers of large figs.

Thank you very much, Leon.  I look forward to your leaf photos when you have the time.

Note: I am going to be here on the forum less and less in the next couple of months.  Alfalfa irrigation has me working crazy hours (slept 3 hours last night, will change irrigation set at midnight tonight so may get 5 hours of sleep tonight), and chestnuts are starting to drop and it will be crazy.  Before chestnut harvest is complete I will also be putting in additional underground irrigation lines for my alfalfa and replant a couple of fields.  I just drop in here for some recreation or trying to stay awake for the next call of duty.

What is special about the LaRadek EBT except the cold hardiness?

The cold hardiness is one of the attributes of this fig so it is a variety that attracts growers in those climates. It is also a great tasting fig and very productive. So it has a lot going for it in that way. I am growing it for the taste, the size, the small eye, and the production in my area. I have had an unprecedented amount of requests for this fig. To me, this is one of the few Brown Turkey variants (EBT) that I like.

Thanks, Leon.
I wonder if it is better than a CA Brown Turkey, a very nice fig too.

Hi leon_edmond,
Those look like brebas of my BrownTurkey . Are those brebas ?
The shape is really different in the main crop of my BT as there is not neck on the main crop.
Does your LaraDek EBT exhibit the same differences ?

There are some differences that a photo can't show you. My BT makes 3/4 brebas per stem - one of my neighbor's makes 6/7 per stem - leaves are almost the same.
Is that enough to call them different ... IMO, definitely YES .

Yes, you are right jdsfrance. Those are brebas. In the LaRadek Photos, the date shows it was picked on July 2nd.

Harvey there is only one Laradek fig. It is a strain of English Brown Turkey that has survived some very harsh cold winters in the Czech republic and still ripened fruit.

Laradek, EBT Laradek & English Brown Turkey (Laradek) or Laradek's Englisht brown turkey is some of the variations I have seen the last 5 years of this fig.

if you google Fíkovník  Laradek you mind find some more info.

Great info guys. Looks like I got to find the real LaRadek BT as I like the attributes of good taste, small eye
hardiness and good productivity. So far my most reliable for 2 crops is Osborne Prolific.

I found an old email address for Laradek to see if he wanted to indicate his preference for a name.  But it seems that Laradek's English Brown Turkey is probably the appropriate name to use.

Laradek emailed me back this morning but didn't answer my question regarding the naming but referred me to this page which shows some good details on his trees cold hardiness (Bing wouldn't translate the page for me so I used Chrome browser to translate it): http://www.fikovniky.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=51

I heard from a reliable source that a source in Austria that sent cuttings to three different people labeled them differently: "Laradek English Brown Turkey", "Laradek EBT", and "Laradek BT" even though they were all the same.  One could speculate his pen was running out of ink, lol.  It was also explained that the Brown Turkey grown in Europe is English Brown Turkey but commonly just called Brown Turkey.

Thanks for the info Harvey, I guess now the community needs to decide which name should be applied.

For many species there is an appointed "registrar" of cultivars chosen by the scientific community.  I personally know the registrars for chestnuts and plumeria. The fact that there is no registrar selected for figs is probably an indication that they've agreed to disagree! lol

It doesn't help either that figs aren't a big cash crop...no interest if there's no money.
