Has anyone tired to spray there trees with 2 teaspoons of sugar and a cup of Borax to control ants? I was reading about this but was concerned it might make the fruit harmful. All input would be helpful.

hm... Borax, it's it poisonous? I don't know much about it except they use it for metal felting process. and chemically metal retrieval process. Ants are notorious farmer, as I found out only few days ago. They cultivate and tender several varieties of parasitic insects because the insects feed/reward them with sugars , which are the byproduct from their system, Insects feed on the saps of plants (roses and Figs and God knows what else...) and they excrete sugary liquid and Ants love it. I say this entire setup on my Mints, which were infested by these parasitic black, tiny insects and the Ants were all over them but to protect and not eat them...was a weird but interesting discovery for me. I washed the black ones with water ( hose on spray mode) and Ants just left.

Borax has been used by professional exterminators for years. The most common use that I have seen was on kitchen surfaces to control sugar ants, as to the danger issue I think that there is none, as to the effectiveness, I would guess that it would work well. A disclaimer - A well known radio host used to say "Do not take anything I say as fact until you have done your own homework" My personal disclaimer is - "I don't know what I am talking about" I think I will try it!

hahaha, Danny, I like your attitude towards the disclaimers... I think mine is going to be "Do't believe anything I say! Ask your lawyer."

Funny I was just about to post about this ant killer recipe one of my friends posted on facebook. 1 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon borax and 1/2 cup water. Boil for three minutes on LOW heat and STIR continually or it sticks badly. I made up a batch last night, poured it into 17 snuff can lids and set them out this morning before work. We have at least three different types of ants in our yard. I would have left them alone except they found my fig pots and seem to love them. Some of the lids are almost all eaten up already. They are supposed to take it into the colony and feed it to the other ants and queen. She dies and the colony dies. My friends swear by this. I will keep putting it out until there are no ants in the yard.

Well Charlie I am going to try your formula. My crop for the year is just about over but I want to get these guys before they burrow down for the winter. I had a infestation of aphids but neem oil wiped them out in a flash. Insects are such a hassle.

I add a spoonful of honey to my borax/sugar traps. The smell really brings the ants out.

DO NOT PUT BORAX IN YOUR CONTAINERS!!! Boron is an essential micronutrient, but too much will cause a toxic situation

It is toxic. Just put orange peels around the container. They will be gone very soon.

Hi, Just for safety reasons, I wouldn't mess with borax - perhaps I'm paranoid . I prefer mechanical solutions - I water the nests when I see some and collect and destroy the eggs if possible. Take some dark pots or black covers and put several over some dirt. That will create a micro climate that will attract ants for nesting at that spot - so choose a spot that you can mess up . When they are settled destroy the nests. Other things I use : Lemons slices and coffee powder ( Once used, instead of throwing it to the trashcans ). Put small heaps around the trees or pots that attract the ants. This year, in Mai, I used some small boxes that are sold against ants ... Just to find some 6 lizards dead ... Yes, lizards eat ants ... Yes I got reminded of food chain basics. So I stopped using the boxes and keep up with watering, destroying nest, disposing coffee and lemons, and scaring for personal fun some happy lizards . Ants do eat figs - they got at least 2 halves on one of my trees .

If all you want to do is keep the ants off your figs, use tanglefoot. Get a piece of cloth that is long enough to wrap around the trunk and a little wider than the tape you will use stick the cloth to one end of the tape wrap the cloth around the trunk with sticky side of tape toward the trunk so that when the cloth is wrapped around the tape continues to wrap around the cloth and eventually to stick to itself apply tangle foot to the tape........... and ants cannot get to your figs.

Borax is less toxic than table salt and is touted as a health remedy in small amounts. Edit: A second source lists borax as slightly more toxic than table salt, still fairly benign. Google borax and arthritis and see the incredible number of claimed health benefits. I only recently learned of this and still need more convincing evidence about all the claims made but I have been using it for several weeks at a very low dose. My hands were getting arthritic and even started growing bony nodules on several finger joints, four days after starting borax my hands started feeling better and weeks later I am totally convinced it is helping. The bursitis in my elbows has also quickly gone away, my left elbow had been hurting for over a year. I am 52 years old and look healthier than most people half my age, I have very good muscle tone for my age but struggled to open a bottle of water for quite a while. My hands feel stronger and no more pain, it really works. I have several herniated discs in my back and the pain and stiffness has improved some also. The pharmaceutical industry knows this and you will read how their influence has had borax banned in Australia and Europe. The fluoride in a single tube of toothpaste will kill a child if eaten but borax would need to be consumed in large quantities for months to reach a toxic level. As one expert said if the same restrictions were used on all chemicals we would have very little left to use. Mineral baths where people go for help with arthritis are very high in boron which is the active ingredient in borax. Some of the other benefits claimed are removal of heavy metals ,stabilizing hormone levels (testosterone and estrogen) and redistributing calcium in your body which is the arthritis helper. I am also feeling a little more upper body strength since using it. In another post a few weeks ago I mentioned my 3 year health decline that had me getting my affairs in order because I was fading fast (lost nearly 70lbs with no medical explanation). I lost all confidence in doctors and hammered the internet to learn while I still had some life in me. Not sure what helped me to get back some of my weight and health but I will offer a couple of tips. Having a root canal removed was a big help, my neuropathy went away in 6 weeks, and my brain fog also. Root canals are always infected, it NEVER EVER goes away, it was proven decades ago and intentionally covered up. The book "Root Canal Cover Up" was written by the an original founder of the root canal society. After he retired he learned how deadly his whole life's work was and wrote the book to expose it. The book will blow your mind at how dangerous root canals are. Google root canal dangers and be aware there are some liars out there who discredit this idea. Another thing is we are in another iodine deficiency epidemic, for the last 100 years or so we have gotten much of our iodine from baked goods but cost control had iodine replaced with bromides and bromide BLOCKS your iodine receptors so you cant even absorb what little we get. I had a goiter that had me going through all kinds of tests and then I went online to discover 80% of goiters are caused by iodine deficiency, took some iodine and the goiter disappeared in weeks. Iodine will also give you a big energy boost if you have been deficient for a while. Don't always trust what your doctor says, he is trained to prescribe pills and surgery they know nothing else but pills and scalpels. My last tip is to take high quality probiotics for gut health that was the one thing I started doing different around the time I started to get better.

Cinnamon and other spices help with ants but this year I used some mint in the fig pots and I think I could taste some in my figs- not sure but would like to hear if its possible.

I tried Cinnamon ...the Tea or just plain sprinkling over the surface of the dirt...not too effective with Ants! they keep coming back. Less but still there.
