John Preece was at the pomegranate and persimmon tasting at Wolfskill on Saturday and I was mentioning to him a grower that had wanted to order some fig cuttings but who had missed the 11/1 deadline.  John went on to say that they will be changing the ordering process at Davis so that there is only a few month window each year for folks to place their orders.  He said under the current system they've had people order the same thing 2 or 3 times in a year, apparently not realizing that they've already got an order in for the accession.  John said that Corvalis does it this way and it has worked out well.

you are so lucky to go to the persimmon tasting at wolfskill. I love the dave wilson video when they toured the persimmon collection. I'd love to find cuttings of some of the varieties they have there.

The crowd was pretty bad this year so I didn't even get to taste some of the persimmon as the fruit was all gone by the time I got to the table.

The most eventful thing for me was taking a couple of miracle fruit berries with me so that I could get a different tasting of the very tart Haku Botan this year.  I shared half of a berry with a UCD student who was wild about the experience.  I then gave the other berry to the USDA's geneticist, Malli, and he also tasted the Haku Botan and he was simply amazed as well.  :)

Here's a photo taken from the end with pomegranates with persimmon being on the far end.  There were approximately 100 folks there for the tasting.  One guy made a repeat trip from Chicago to come to taste pomegranates (and also pick/buy fruit at my farm) and another came from Italy.  He took back cuttings and a plant from my place, hope he made it back okay.[IMAG2308]
