How does this happen? The ones care less about are doing great and I did the exact same thing with all of them. Really frustrating, growing from cuttings is an emotional roller coaster

Sorry to hear it, Lukie. That is one of the things about this variety though... it can be challenging to successfully root cuttings. I had three cuttings a couple of years ago, and that happened to two of the three. The third one succeeded and I have a decent tree from it now. It just reminds us that "partial progress" doesn't count I guess... it's only successful if you get a living tree out of it. I may be able to make a couple of cuttings once I get mine out of winter storage, in the spring time. I'll check on it then. (Or I may root them and instead offer rooted trees for sale). If you're still looking for this variety around April or May, let me know. Mike

Sorry to hear of your loss.
I worry about the municipality water supply killing the cuttings.
There is a local spring close to my mothers house.
I am now watering the fig trees with the spring water.

Maltese Falcon has been one of the harder varieties to root for me. Don't know why.

Yeap, same here. Last year I lost 4 cuttings at different stages. I hope this year is better for me. I also have a different approach now.
As soon as the cuttings have any desent root system, they go into the ground (zone 10a, can do it any time).
So far so good! And no gnats problem (knock on wood)

Sorry for your loss, Luke. Maltese Falcon cuttings I received from drivewayfarmer(Kerry) rooted extremely quickly and have put out beautiful robust growth on top. I'd recommend that source if he has any left! I think his plants are very healthy and produce good material. I was also pleased to see that the Maltese Beauty is now showing roots, this one took 2 weeks longer to show signs of life.

Long before the leaves will wilt the cutting is rotting at the bottom, this is from inadequate air flow from oversaturation or density/particle size of the rooting medium. I switched to coco coir this year and have had almost none of this. Coco allows for 30% air flow even when fully saturated. Check out my propagation setup post for details.
