This is a greenhouse ripened fig picked this morning. Not bad. Better than nothing. Better than Brown Turkey. But not anywhere near a summer sun ripened fig. It was good Frank. But the greenhouse is expensive to heat. That one fig probably added $100 to my electric bill. __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

Between a greenhouse, sunroom, and grow lights I've had figs all fall and some still ripening. The Strawberry Verte, Paradiso, Battaglia types are excellent if allowed to shrivel up on the plant. Panevino Dark needed drying to be sweet and even some of those were just a fiber boost, not much taste. It has also allowed an early start on next yrs crop. The skin on the Greenhouse figs feels harder than sun-ripened, and it is not near as tasty. But still, overall, pretty decent. __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

Looks good. Riped nice for this time of year. Looks good Rafael. Ed too. They last handful of figs I ripened in the sun room weren't worth the effort. Well, not there was much effort involved but the point is they were flavorless. The sun room isn't heated at night time, so although it doesn't freeze it does get pretty cool; apparently cold enough to kill all the flavor. I got decent flavor until November and then it went down hill pretty fast, the early arctic blast could be partly to blame. For me, now I know that next year when they start to get flavorless to just pull the rest of them off and save the plants energy. __________________ Calvin Littleton,CO z5/6 Wants List: For everyone to clean-up after themselves and co-exist peacefully. Hey Cal Yeah I am not planning on repeating the experiment as I deem the expense not to be worth the result, I will use the greenhouse mainly for early starts and early autumn ripening, maybe to protect varieties that split during heavy rain or tropical storms, eg Panachee or Paradiso Gene. __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

I heard a guest from Maine interviewed on our local radio station (KLBJ) gardening show who somehow used her chickens to provide heat for her greenhouse. It's been a few years ago, so the details are foggy, but it was interesting to me.
