Winter invaded Europe, cold already appears even in sunny Greece, I wonder did anybody of you ever see or hear about figs in Florina? According to wikipedia the lowest temp. ever noticed was -29C (-20,2F).

not many greeks know named figs. all they know is skin color. so its a dark unknown or light unknown... you have to go there and look at the trees that made it over the winter and get cuttings. after you grow it and plant it, you must protect it for the first 3-4 years...

That will be extremely hard. :D Cuz Florina isn't even on turist map. Far, far away from sea. :( But however that's a great news.

Hi Maris, It is my belief that even in Greece there are zones not suited for fig trees, and thus there are no fig trees in those particular zones. In France, you can't have a fig tree in the higher mountains - Alps for instance... Even here at my elevation, it is already tough and troublesome ! Even just 30 km away from me, some strains don't do it - they grow but don't ripen anything ! and others produce unreliably - every other year. I lost most of my trees at -25°C ... so at -29°C ... I wouldn't want to give it a try .
