Even if it were upside down, which it isn't, it would not have anything to do with the seller.

Danny, could I ask a favor.  The move was rough, and I need cuttings of the vines I sent to you.  I promise to send some really good fig cuttings in return.  I need Touriga National and Tempranillo.  OK?

Not very clear, but that cutting at the right side (with air roots) seems to be upside down.
The right way is to have the-bud-above-the-leaf-scar; this one bud seems to coming from the side?!?

The node is up, the bud is actually more to the side for some reason.  He, apache, advertised that these were "Large Black Mission", I don't know if they are real Black mission or not but I bought them on a whim as I was really after the Blue Giant cuttings, we will see what they turn out to be.

As to the "air roots" when I get them like that I always plant the whole cutting to take advantage of the "extra" roots.

so, I haven't understand ! is the cuttings upside down? if you burried the whole cutting including the roots, how you will get the buds breaking up above the soil?

Congrats on a nice transaction.

Some cuttings are hard to tell which way is up or down, usually because of close node spacing and rough bark combined with small buds.  Planting the entire thing below soil will usually result in a sucker coming up eventually, it's no big deal.  Sometimes the top of my cutting dies for some reason but a sucker comes up and all is well.

One thing I learned from a long-time commercial propagator is to prepare cuttings by cutting the bottom flat (square) right below a node and the top is cut at an angle right above a node/bud (unless a tip cutting).  The main reason for the angled cut is that in a misting propagation set-up the angled cut will allow the water to drain off instead of sit there and cause rot.  However, it also helps to easily identify which way is up so I prepare all of my cuttings this way (ones I root myself as well as those I sell).  I know of at least one other member here who learned to use the same method.  I recommend everyone try it.  Figs aren't usually so difficult to tell but I root pomegranates also and many times those are pretty tough.

I started about 140 varieties this year. Most are 3 cuttings per pot, so you can imagine how many cuttings I delt with. When I'm in doubt about which way is up I plant them horizontal. Does not happen very often. I have a bunch I got as single or double nodes and others I broke down. Those all get planted horizontal.

@Harvey - Angle cut on top, flat on bottom, wish everyone would do it.  The node will always tell the correct direction, it may take a light hand or fingertip to feel it but it will be there.

@Kassoum - The cutting is not upside down, the bud is growing weird but the cutting is not upside down.

Horizontal works very well with figs, all of our Brugmansia are started in the horizontal orientation.
