Hi all. Hope fig growing is going well. Starting to get into the ripening season her in NNJ. I have 5 trees. All are vigorous and doing very well - planted in ground - except for a black mission tree. It was planted early May and has since been facing periods of stunted growth ... for about 3 weeks in early June and it seems to be happening again. It gets in this temporary slump. Not sure why. As you can see from the pictures, the BM seems a bit stunted and hasn't grown much compared to the others which is bizarre because BM is supposed to be a fast grower. Also, I got to ripened figs from the plant so far and the taste is very bland. Size is good as well as texture. On the other hand, the Kadota figs so far are HUGE and extremely tasty. Is this just a bad tree or can it be something else? All have been fertilized and taken care of similarly. I haven't checked for RKN but never had a problem with that here. It seems as if the tree is stressing periodically and has caused stunted growth. The leaves also are symptomatic of FMV but does FMV stunt growth? Pics are below! 1. BM 2. BM 3. BM - fruit 4. BM 5. BM *All above pics are of / from the same BM tree. Below are others for you to enjoy. Two are Celeste and two are Kadota. BELOW: BM is second from right

One thing you might want to try is to knock off all the figs on the young trees. The fruits use a lot of the energy that the tree could use instead to grow in size. Next year, your harvest will be larger with higher quality fruit. Also, some varieties just taste nice right away in their first or second season, and others take a few years to develop fruits worth eating. Sometimes, young trees just need a while to get started, particularly if they've been introduced to a new growing environment. I've had rooted cuttings that only put out an inch of growth during their first season and then stopped all activity for several months. Now, in their second year, those same cuttings have put out 2 - 3 feet worth of growth.

Yeah, I would say its a young tree issue. I would pull the figs this year and let it grow more so next year you will have more and better fruit.

Maybe not a black mission at all. Fruit and leaves don't seem to be a match. To me it looks like a dark lsu fig maybe Purple or scotts black. Do you have a pic of the interior? That would explain why you're already getting figs and the taste issue. BM ripens later for me here in GA!

Also your ripe figs look like breba figs and that could also explain the weak flavor. Main crop should be way tastier! All your trees look great though and thanks for sharing.

FYI LSU Purple does not have red eye in immature flower. Think you can rule that out.

The tree is a black mission from Monrovia.

It doesn't look like a black mission. I would guess the tree from Monrovia was mislabeled. The leaf and fig look like Black Jack which is a small tree and is sold by Monrovia. Check out the images in the Black Jack posting by KCMarie from September 2014

I really don't think your tree is a Black Mission. I don't think it's a Black Jack either. It's something else. That's just my opinion. Good luck with it. Looks like a good fig.
