This Fig has been a great grower and has already fruited and it was just a cutting last Spring 2015.
The fruit has a very sweet berry taste to me sorta and it really is hard to describe. It is an outstanding grower here. They are raised commercially in France. I got my cuttings from Marius...Good Luck  growing this year. : )Violette de Sollies.jpg  Violette de Sollies cut.jpg

Beautiful looking fig, Frank! I think this is an underrated fig, too. I've heard reports that it is pretty hardy. Do you have it in the ground?

Thanks for the picks and description.

I have wondered myself and have a plant coming from James.

I believe this fig has something like a "Certificate of Province", in France  as a protection of the strain and origin.

Memory from reading awhile ago.

It is a super tasty and large fig. I've seen smaller sized figs on the same tree. It was one of my fastest growers in pot, and when moved to in ground, it slowed down dramatically. The clay soil had a great impact on the rate of growth of all my in ground trees.
Productivity this year was poor (about five fruits), but it remains among my top five tasting dark varieties.

I dont think that's a VdS. The leaves don't look right and the VdS is a very squat fig sometimes with a long stem

See this French video

If Marius gave you Barnisote from UCD it is not VdS.

Frank, sorry to hijack your thread. Elin mentioned that it has a local variety called Adler. I bought a fig tree in a nursery. The tag had only the name "Adler P" and i could not find a single line of information on this variety on the web.

Elin, your Adler is a San Pedro? I am asking because mine is dropping the figs (i think they may be a second crop). Could you check the leaves of my tree and maybe compare with your local variety?

Adler_P_folhas_figos_Agosto_2016.JPG Adler_P_folhas_figos2_Agosto_2016.JPG Adler_P_folhas_figos3_Agosto_2016.JPG Adler_P_folhas_figos4_Agosto_2016.JPG

Nice Violette de Solliès figs, Frank.

I managed to get a small cutting of this variety and it rooted with great difficulty. I wasn't very lucky because the small tree has been touch and go. I have never seen such a bad case of FMV but i think it's pulling through.

I hope she shakes some of the FMV and outgrows it, so i can taste a few figs like the one's you showed.

Jaime hi,

There a good chance your fig came from Israel as there was exchange of cuttings with portugal (we have alot of portuguese varieties in experimental orchards-like ponte del gada).

I am attaching photos of Adler which according an article -also attached is identical to black italian/Brojoito nero.

also in this post theres a discussion of VDS and BN-http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1285407226&postcount=16&forum=0

As to your fig it looks like a VDS by the leaf shape. maybe other reason for dropage of figs?

Anyhow i believe i should get a vds and compare these two babies.. :)

Frank,
Beautiful fruit you got there and it looks excatly like VDS I had from France. Mine dropped this year although one is still sticking on the tree. Your leaf looks like VDS too and I don't know what the other bloke was on about lol.

Cheers
