I just spoke to Mary Parker and she informed me that they started to package the cuttings yesterday and, although it's going slow, it's going well.

I know! I was shocked to receive a shipment notification from them earlier today. I put in my requests long enough ago that it took me a minute to figure out why "USDA, ARS, NCGR" was sending me something! Of course, at this point I have absolutely no recollection of what I requested, so I'm sure whatever comes will be a very nice surprise. :-)

I just realized that I never sent any shipping payment info with my order. I still have the email. I could reply to it and add that. What do I need to send them? I have a USPS.com account, but I don't see any account number or anything that I am supposed to send them.

Paul, USDS doesn't ship by USPS (though that would definitely be the best choice when they ship to me just 40 miles away).  They want a FedEx or UPS account number.  If you don't provide either they will usually just absorb the cost.  Otherwise, you can open  up a FedEx account (their preference, I believe) and give them the account number.

Just FYI, I prefer UPS because all of the other ones irradiate their packages. I always do my best to give my cuttings the best shot in surviving. And, NO, I do not work for UPS! LOL. Just something to think about

@IamKriya, how do you know about irradiation of packages? How can we find out who does and who doesn't? This shouldn't be a secret.

Aaron, I have always known about this since knowing about irradiation is important in my profession. I'm sure if you do a search online it will come up. You are right, this shouldn't be a secret. But, like most things, unless one does his/her homework one would be left with 'filtered' information.

@IamKryia, thanks for the advise, I went ahead and opened a UPS account and notified Mary, OMG, she was so thankful. It felt so nice to talk to her...
Apparently they don't get paid by everybody. How unthankful some people can be.

Just an FYI about UPS. If you have your account just for this purpose you will need to update it before your order ships. I did not know this and my account had been suspended for lack of use. They sent my package anyway, which made me feel horrible. UPS will ask you for information found on your last bill in order to update your account. Save your bill even if it's paid so you can enter information from it.

My FedEx notice tells me I should expect a package today 3/14 (Pi day).  It's like Christmas (including the crushingly cold weather <g>) all over again.  I wonder what I got?  Is it here yet?

I'll post on the order versus the fulfillment post Christmas package opening.

I got a package today! I vaguely remembered ordering scion but didn't remember which. I got Black Madeira and Panache. I know I ordered pomegranate scion but did not receive anything. Harvey said they come at the same time so I guess they're not coming. But am I disappointed? NO! I am so grateful!

No.  Black Ischia, or Ischia Black, have reddish petioles, for one thing.  Look at the variety index, they are both richly flavored black figs but still quite different.

I didnt realize they will ship to you if you didnt provide a Fedex or UPS account number so I just wrote off the cuttings. I just moved and didnt inform them of my address change although I did do a change of address at the Postal Service. Maybe I should go knock on the door at my old house and let them know Im expecting a package of cuttings!!!!! I ordered some good ones to but got all caught up in moving and such. If its meant to be, so be it!

Where can I find that phone number?  I've looked all over the site and have never seen a reference to Mary Parker, much less a phone #.  I see an email contact for Howard Garrison for questions about the collection.

The only phone# I see is at the top of this page.  Is that the number to reach her at?

My order was much smaller this year than last - just filling in on 'new' (to me) varieties.  I also didn't receive Ischia Black.  I did receive Ischia White. So far, I'm really falling into the dark fig loving category, but we'll see how some of the light figs I have work out.

The largest diameter branches I received this year were off of Excel.  A number of the others were small to wispy.  Hopefully they will all grow out and become big and strong - years from now.

Sorry guys, was dealing with another dilemma in the garden, My Pomegranates were growing leggy, they are in 5 gallons but very young... also they are under sun so, I don't know if I should use support for the long, thin branches or just trim them?

Thanks for the rescue Harvey. It's surely useful information you gave us all.

I am so excited about my order, I am going to have a blast rooting them. I have found a Landscaper friend who has brought me 100, 1-gallon nursery pots, and he said he will bring as much as I will need in the rooting process, for free :) I wish I could share with you guys... if any one local let me know...

Now I have to find affordable yet very high grade soil for the babies. Those Miracle-Grow potting Soils Mixes are becoming a big expense and my wife is starting to look at me funny. She brought up the fact that I had bought 14 big bags already and ... they are like 15$ each? I pretended I am busy and can't talk at that time...hoping for her to forget the subject, but...

i do small amount of cuttings. maybe 15-20 at a time, so the expense is not very noticeable unless you start adding them up. a small bag of MG seedling soil and perlite, that's $10 for me. with that, i can put about 8 1 gal, or 28 cups. cheaper route would be getting bale of s. peat moss, and 4 cu ft of perlite. but you need to add your own fertilizer and so on.. i keep noticing mild fertilizer helps with rooting and general health of the cuttings. too much can cause issues.

I thought I was a goner on this one. Hadn't heard anything and had resigned to the fact that I screwed up that form and would try again next year. To my total surprise I receive an email this morning  from the most wonderful Mary Parker.
She was in fact having a problem with my FedEx and went out of her way to email me. She definitely is an unsung hero. Thank you Miss Parker.
Now to see what I actually get.
This fig thing is very exciting.

yes, M Parker is a wonderful help to this entire process to all of us. She was humbly surprised when I called her to give her my UPS account number. Thanked me too on top of it... NO THANK YOU MY DEAR :)

Pete, I am not good at playing with fertilizer yet, I am avoiding to temper with it, specially when it comes to freshly planted ones...

fertilizer is very personal thing. if it works out, it's great. if it fails, we can all blame it on fertilizer. first yr, i didn't give any fertilizer until the cutting was in 1 gal and it's been in 1 gal for at least a month. i would water first, then give 1/4 strength.

now, I give very weak fertilizer to cuttings in the cup. some cuttings that are not responding will "awake up" after first does.

Thanks Pete.  I had actually placed two orders last year, one real early with most of what you see, the second order with Black Madeira, Col de Dame, Black Ischia, Pastillere and a few others.  Both orders came together yesterday.  I took the top 3" off of both the CdD and BM and put them in a 2L humidity dome to try out that method of rooting.  The remainders of the two cuttings were split in half, dipped in rooting hormone, waxed on the top end and placed in moss like normal.  Having the extra cuttings of less rare varieties is going to make for a fun summer of experimenting on grafting, rooting methods, etc.

WOW !!! Here is my package, I was able to get some real sought after cuttings. I didn't know any of this existed 2 years ago, and now I'm like a kid at Christmas.
By the way, I thought the cuttings were a bit wet and had to let them dry a bit. Anybody else feel that way? Also are there any known cultivars that are notoriously diseased?
Very fun day cleaning them up and getting them going. I couldn't be more impressed with the UCD program.

Aaron I'm not sure of the cost, I havent seen my UPS bill yet.

My cuttings were bone dry. To the point of sucking up the paint in my paint pen so that I had to overwrite their names a few times.
