Okay the post topic probably sounds confusing.  I started winter protection late in my area because we had two slight frosts and for the most part have had very warm weather recently.  I put round cages sorta like tomato cages around my figs and filled the cages with leaves.  I covered the tops and about a quarter of the cage with plastic to keep rain out so the leaves wouldn't settle.  I didn't fully cover the cages due to concerns with mold etc.  However now I am concerned, it is officially winter and it is 72 degrees outside.  From what I can tell it seems we are going to have a warm January as well.  Is it a bag idea to have leaves directly on fig branches during warm weather?  It sounds like it could be...  It was a lot of work for all my figs but I did it and thought it was great but if the branches began to rot or mold it would have been for nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply fig pig!  Actually I did pull off all the fig's leaves.  What I was wondering about was if the winter protection is okay.  Something about having leaves packed around my fig branches during nearly 80 degree weather makes me concerned about mold, fungus or rot.

If the leaves were dry and you've kept the rain off, shouldn't be an issue.

Actually during warm spells it's the best thing you could do. Wrapping doesn't always work for it really cannot keep a tree warm. What it can do is keep temperatures constant. If your tree didn't have the leaves, it could have started growing. Many fruit trees are flowering now, which means no fruit next spring. It is the freeze-thaw cycle that hurts a lot of plants. Thaw on a sunny winter day, and freeze again at night. Too many days like that will kill many types of plants.
Where I'm at wrapping doesn't do much good for figs. It's cold, and cold for a long time. Anyway the number of figs that work outside here is low. Burying the fig tree would work, labor intensive though.

So wrapping the figs holds the temp around the plant constant, warm or cold. That is a very good thing in zones like 7a. there it is very helpful to keep temps more constant during the winter.

I'm in the same boat.  I winterized all my figs for another hard winter, but it was 70F here yesterday! But I think they will come through OK as long as this warn weather does not last. The forecast is for highs in the 40s in a few days.
