It's from Houston area, Texas. Was collected from an estate after the owner died. It's an unknown variety that was named purple passion. Mine has a breba currently.

Ditto to what Bass said. I drove down to Houston last month and talked to Dalton about that fig on my way to Houston. I think it is a late heavy bearer. Dalton said when when he got his cuttings they were loaded with figs. I brought back a few small trees. It is not Brown Turkey. My Purple Passion trees are alteady 20 inches tall and I haven't even fertilized them yet. I will post pics after I send out cuttings.
JD, this is the one I will be sending you tomorrow. I will email you privately after i ship it.

How is everyone's Purple Passion coming along? I've had this one in the ground for a little over 2 years now. It's producing its first crop, a breba crop. The fruit is huge and juicy. I'm new to fig growing, but so far I really like this tree and look forward to its main crop. I had no idea when buying it that it was a local, Houston-introduced variety. The woman helping me at the nursery (Arbor Gate) convinced me to get it saying it was delicious. I seem to remember her mentioning something about Italian heritage. I should call back to get more information about that. Northeastnewbie and snaglpus, how are yours now (6 years later)?

HMH, you went too far back in time. It's not quite 4 years since they posted. ;)

I pulled 2 of my mine out of the GH last week. I haven't treated it very well but the dare tree loves to put out figs! I sold a bunch a few years ago to a guy in Gastonia, NC. He says they're larger and sweeter than his brown turkey fig growing in his yard.

Just picked up a Purple Passion that I had on Backorder. I think that this is a special variety and is not a Brown Turkey as some have claimed. Even if it is, here's what I learned.
I met a lady that has a four year old tree and the size is 10x10 ft. She has several fig trees. If she ever send me a photo I will post it.
This one is her top fig tree. The wholesale company that sells this variety to retail nurseries, I was told has the whole perimeter of its property planted with this variety.
Since the name was not known at the time this variety was acquired, they called it Purple Passion.
The tree looks extremely healthy with deep green color leaves. It was given to the lady's father by a fig collector many years ago and both individuals are no longer with us in order to establish the real source.
