There was a post on this forum about Green Ischia figs at Wal-Mart. I actually found a few at my local Wal-Mart so I decided I would make a purchase. This fig was already slightly formed when I planted the tree in the ground. I tried my best to pick the fig when it was fully ripe but by the looks of the inside of the fig it was not ripe though it was still sweet. This fig should be very red on the inside but apparently I jumped the gun on picking. The fig was drooping and when I picked it there was no latex which are indicators of ripe fruit but I am not used to picking green figs. Sorry for the under ripe pic but I figured I might as well make this post anyway.

In my opinion, not Ischia. Don't know what it is, but it is not Ischia. Close to Kadota

I'm guessing it was a tissue-cultured "Ischia" fig you picked up at Wal-Mart. A few members had Ischia figs which turned out like that. The guess was that it was really something more like a White Marseilles.http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/white-ischia-turns-out-it-might-be-white-marseilles-7587906?highlight=ischia+marseilles&pid=1289592696

If it were tissue culture would I be getting figs on such a small tree? I'm going to wait for a main crop then we can test the fruit for certain and see what variety. The only varieties that get sold out here in the stores are Southern Brown Turkey and Celeste so to see something like White Marseilles or Kadota at Wal-mart would be extremely bizarre. If you are basing the opinions on the fruit I can tell you for sure it wasn't totally ripe due to texture.

Thanks for the link, you definitely might be right jkuo. Either way I have Green Ischia cuttings that are rooting now from a proven source. So I guess eventually I will have Green Ischia.

I think the main issue is the inside color. As you described the fig, it would be ripe enough to have the signature red color. the Green Ischia is a good producer here and produces figs well into the fall. Walmart, Lowe's, and Home Depot are known for the mis-labeling of their fig trees. I have some labelled Green Ischia and they are purple.

You have White Marseilles fig cultivar. When you get a fig from a large chain store expect 90 percent of the time to be the wrong cultivar. Lucky, you got a decent cultivar and not a worthless seedling.!

I agree, not Green Ischia. Here is a video of a Green Ischia breba.

So is this cultivar worth having? I thought of scooping up a couple more. Are they better than Southern Brown Turkey or Celeste?

Figpig_66 you are talking about "White Marseilles"?

So it seems that this "Green Ischia" was wrongly labeled as everyone has said and that it is in fact White Marseilles but from what I understand it is also called Italian Honey and has a few other names. Does anyone else grow this variety? What are your thoughts on this fig?

There is a lot of good information in previously posted threads on this fig. Search on "Monticello". I have trees grown from cuttings from Monticello thanks to Mike (mggva)

I fell for this too, but mine is from lowes. Someone said white Marseilles is the same as Italian honey fig. Is that true?

my italian honey has large 3 lobed almost square leaves. I think marseilles has ribbed skin and italian honey does not.

Looks like most on the forum agree that "White Marseilles" = "Italian Honey"

I wish I had seen this post before I paid $12 for my Wally World "Ischia" last night. :/ A bit of an impulse buy (not instant grab and go, I did cook on the proposition for quite a while). I drove through the Wal-Mart parking lot after leaving Lowes a little after dark, and my fig-trained eye spotted something....something that looked like....FIG LEAVES!!! It seemed kinda cool that I found figs at Wal-Mart, considering where I live. I figured it was worth it because I could use some of the branches for cuttings later. They had some strong Celeste trees-- or whatever they called "Celeste." I considered getting one of them for a similar purpose but didn't. My celeste has no branches yet, so I can't take cuttings without snipping the top off. At least it's not some tiny thing. It's in a 2-3 gal. pot with several shoots and a few little figs. Oh, well... It's a fig tree at any rate... My single Green Ischia cutting is hanging onto life with a single green bud. I got it off of one of the forum members. My success so far with my first attempt at starting dormant cuttings has been rough, considering pictures of what others have managed. If it weren't for the fact that figs are tough as nails, I wouldn't have a leg to stand on. But, of course... that's a good part of why I chose figs ;) At least the groundhogs don't eat them.... They just dig them up! :@ But all that is for another thread....

I got a green ishia from Walmart last year and it had two breba on it this year, I ate The first one, it looked just like your picture, a perfect match, I also thought I picked it to soon, so I waited on the next one to get sugar spots and get real saggy and soft, when I cut it in half it looked no different from the first one just a little sweeter, waiting on main crop now.
