Because I now have 5 potted fig trees I'm planning to dedicate a 4foot X 25 foot bed for them next year. I bury the pots for the summer and then they go in the cold cellar every fall for the winter.

I would give them the morning sun, for two reasons, first I think the morning sun is better no proof of that just my feeling, second that would give you shade after 5:00 when you are probably going to be working around your figs after work, like weeding, watering or just watching your figs grow

I think that this decision is same as solar power, more solar power tree get, better deal
Granthams Royal , RdB, any heavy breba varieties or early one crop varieties.

In colder zones, it might be worth thinking about drying out leaves from dew.

Im going to go with morning sun until 5pm.. Only because I have my trees in 2 places right now.. One receives sun from the crack of dawn until the sun dips below the horizon to say goodnight, and the other is in my backyard that receives sun from crack of dawn until about 3 or 4ish.. Surprisingly the ones in the backyardwith less sun are doing better! Both fruit wise and general health & vigor wise.. Could there be a unknown/confounding variable at play? Its definitely possible! Lol but I'm not doing anything different that I'm aware of at least.. I think you will do well in either place, but its nice like Mario said to do your fig watching in the late afternoon in the shade as well.. Just my 2cents though :)

I think ,both situations are good,just experiment first year,place one on the side you would not want them and the rest ,on side convenient for you.

Thx all for responding. Still don't know which direction to go. Funny a few have mentioned afternoon shade for enjoying the garden as I am the exact opposite being a morning person. Many mornings I am out puttering before 6AM with coffee in hand just watching and listening to the world waking up. My large cedar hedge at back keeps my veggie garden shaded until about 9AM so I try to get most of my work done before the sun peeks over the top of it.
