A couple of years ago I drove to Niagara falls to dig out 3 trees from someones back yard who had just bought the house and wanted to get rid of the inground fig trees that came with it.
This is one of those trees , and by far the best tasting fig in my collection of 60 varietites of which atleast 20 have fruited .

Main crop

Another

Over 60 grams . A good size fig !

I have been making as many copies as I can because I want to spread this one around . It doesnt split or sour in the rain , nor does it suck up water and get bland .

Air layer on tree.

Foil removed showing plastic bag around pineapple container to keep moist.

Tuck tape (for sealing vapour barrier plastic together) to seal joints .

Roots after 6 weeks on tree.

Final product , with a fig to go.

Thanks for watchin .... John

Hi John:Now That is a  plant that deserves to be spread out.
There are many Bad figs being traded and a few good ones.
This one is a good one and it is not Brown Turkey.
If it get ripe in Canada,I am sure it will get ripe in the USA,but it needs to be brought here and is not easy,as ,there are so many rules that  do not allow, even if a tree is superior.
Even if both countries stands to gain, the rules ,still do not allow.

Fruit reminds me of Abebereira, but the leaves look nothing like it.

John ,
That is a beautiful looking fruit and strong praise you give it , that it is the best in your collection.
Hope Niagara Black can make it's way down "south" eventually.
Best ,

John, I will be in Downsview in mid September visiting family. Perhaps I could be a conduit for your Black Niagra cuttings to the States. IM me if amenable.

Hey John ,

Those are last years pics . I started picking figs September 10 last year . But it had been dug up the previous fall and potted after years in ground so I expect it was a bit delayed .
We will see this year . It makes breba but they look deformed and all the dozen or so it formed this year fell off at various stages . So knock them off early to get main crop sooner ( that is my intention next year ) .

Pete & Rob , as far as I know it is an Italian variety .

Dan here are some photos of the honey dripping .

Drop of honey takes hours to drip

Look at leaf below fig . Thick syrup acumulates for days till ripe

Raining for a couple days (mid september ) yet no splitting and still taste great

Nice looking fig John. What does it taste like? Berry or Figgy? Jammy or Juicy? Rich? Sweet? All of the above?

Definitely a nice fig, I think the home owner made a great mistake when he decide to dug this fig up. But  I only have to say i am glad he did so you John can share this good looking fig with others so many can enjoy them.

JD

This fig to me tastes exactly what a fig should taste like . Not watery with a thick creamy almost jammy consistency of figgy flavor with a nice amount of sweetness but not sugary sweet . The skin is thin and soft not rubbery like Kadota  .
The last time I had one was last October but every time my wife and I shared one it was sooo much better than the rest .
I don't mean in any way to hype this fig . I am giving it away free to anyone I know who will spread it around . It deserves to be out there because a lot of figs I have that are named and popular just don't compare to this one .

The fig and leaves look exactly like my Longue d'Aout (MM) fig. Stunning photos!

Johnparav, with 20+ figs fruiting in your climate you'd be a great one to tell us your top 10 for taste.

Hey Leon After looking at your post I looked up some photos of longue d'aout but I do not see a similarity with the fruit . Do you have any photos of yours ? John

Leon I too have been thinking about this as I have both young plants Niagara Black and Longue D'aout and leaves are too destinct and similar to ignore. Only difference is that the Niagara Black makes darker figs. Anyone get ripe main crop longue daout this dark? I can assure you niagara blk is an excellent tasting fig.

Dr Leon
Does your lda or mm drip honey? Mine does not plus I have another unknown thlas leaves look the same but the fruit is green.
I was wondering if this could be a whole family of figs like the kadota or mt enta?

John,

Your uncle John called me today and wanted me to come over tomorrow to pick some figs. I told him I was in Texas and that I would be back home this weekend. I will try to catch him on Monday because Tuesday I will head out your way.
I told him I will be seeing you next week and he start laughing. He sounded to be happy with his new figs. I'm glad I was able to help him.

Hey, Rafed! If you are ever in the San Antonio area, you are welcome to come by for a visit. I have a one-room bedroom guest house you can even crash in (not literally!).

Thanks for the offer Ruben,

I delivered in Houston and picked up in Sugarland and now I am in Laredo to deliver and pick up tomorrow. Two nasty loads back to back, I'm talking about the freight. Can't say much now.

I will meet with Cathy tomorrow evening. I will for sure get intouch with you the next time I'm in the area.

Most of my work is in or out of Texas, my wife once asked if I had a 2nd family here because I come here so much. LOL

I couldn't do that kind of work. I fall asleep if I drive more than a few hours. My brother used to be a long haul driver before he passed away. Wish I could get out and see more of this land. Have been around the world though. Literally!

Hello John (and Nelson), here I have attached some photos from several threads entitled "Melanzana Merd". I later identified this Adriano fig to be the same as Longue D'Aout.

LdA and Niagara have similarities and I agree with Nelson about the color differences but also the timing of ripening. Niagara appears way early compared to my main crop LdA (MM). It may be a totally different cultivar. It is a beautiful fig, no doubt. Time and comparison will tell us more.

Celt, sorry about not addressing your question. My LdA (MM) does not produce any droplets from the eye when fully ripe.

FYI, those fruit pics were taken last September 10th according to the date imbedded in the pics. They are from when John first asked for help identifying this find on this thread http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/My-best-fig-so-far-.-Help-identify-5493096 last September 15th. btw, I think Leon may be on to something.

@John- does it produce breba fruit?

Ruben, good question. If John can show photos of or describe the brebas, then we'll know for sure. Thanks for clarifying the dates on John's pics. I thought his posting of the photos was real time.

Ruben, Yes it produced breba this spring probably close to a dozen , but they all dropped at different stages of development and most looked like curly cucumbers . Leon , Dan makes a good point about the dripping honey . But other than that I think you are on to something because I see a resemblance with the photos in your second link ( not exactly the same but very close ) maybe they are related . The skin cracks , the bottom of the fig and shape too , but the lack of constant honey drip . Again I will try my best to save you cuttings or at the very least next season a sucker or layer . John

John:
Do the brebas resemble anything like this one from my LdA tree?
There are very few brebas in comparison to the main crop. The brebas are generally not flavorful at all and will fall off sometimes prematurely.

Leon ,

None of the brebas made it anywhere near that size . They all fell of prematurely and many were curled in shape . But they were more elongated than the main crop from what I remember .

First ripe fig this season was Sept 3 .
Unfortunately had 2 days of 2 inch rainfall each within a 5 day period which did cause swelling and souring of a couple figs . Last year had no problems with rain ...
