I'm watering my figs and all of a sudden take a double take and trace the fig down the stem to the pot and can't believe what I am seeing.  It's the Zidi controversy rising up from the ashes.  I get all the Zidi together.  I almost was going to get rid of them.  This doesn't look like a fig ready to drop because there is a Zidi fig looking like it's going to drop like the ones on my Kalamata so I know what it look like.  This one looks like it is ripening?

I came by and spray painted last night on my way through Worcester. LOL

Zidi is a beautiful tree, so if there's any hope at all of fruits, I think I'd want one of those even more than Smith.

Looking at that fruit I can read on it ,it needs pollination,and might just be inedible inside.
That is because it has the look of Pastilliere,and Santa Cruz dark,just before to abort wooden tasting figs.
If it was juicy and tasty just say it,I will like to be proved wrong so I get me a Zidi ,for myself,in the future.

i also have Zidi with 2 fruits, they are only 35 days old and i will post as to what they do .

I fully understand what Herman means as i have seen on my Pastiliere fruits color but not swell and thats the worse sign .
But lets see what happens either way. I show mine in another thread not to impose on this one.

As another note i had a UcDavis Santa Cruz Dark i propagated. It had bad case of FmV at first but then the next season it looked much better and by the 3rd season it surprised me it looked so much better.

It always fully ripened its main crop but i gave away to neighbor because its taste was not as good as many others i grow in yard so it was expendable.
I have many pictures of its fruit on disk.

I have not removed it yet.  I just noticed it today.  It had color on one side only so far and does not seem to be swelling yet so maybe false alarm.  I did not think fruit that dropped would change color.[QUOTE=Herman2]Well TMC?How was the taste?.

Tom yes on problem tree like my Pastiliere they color no swell and drop.
Another problem tree Kalamata Black they go from green to yellow with out swelling and drop last 4 seasons everyone never a ripe one.

Tom for me anyways in my yard with all my dark types when i realize there close to start the ripening process here is what happens.

During daylight hours and observed closely
They go from green to somewhat lighter color.
Soon they start to swell and start to color .

Figs can look normal though one day and i wake up next morning and look at fig trees and i see a fig swollen and colored somewhat and that happens and still excites me. It may be because i did not look at them real close before time but its an exciting time.

The figs that looked like they were ripening ended up falling off.

It clearly show need of pollination,that is why it looks so ugly inside.

Here is a Zidi teasing with another possible fig.  I'm tempted to pick it and only noticed the cracking when I reviewed the pictures.  I think it looks promising and had to read the thread again where there is some evidence of some figs ripening without the fig wasp.  I think I see some red flesh through the crack in the skin.  It's also very well attached with no indication that it will drop off soon.  It's also a darker color than the first one pictured above that never turned this dark before dropping off.

I've gone back and forth several times about wanting to try this fig. After finding at least a small colony of fig wasps about 20 miles away, I decided to take some cuttings from a zidi tree from someone I was visiting recently. They are rooting now, so we shall see. I hope it doesn't break my heart.

I got my answer on Zidi and it was a delicious one.  I thought for sure it was going to trick me and be just dry flowers inside again.  Instead it was a sweet experience and I would say it was as good as Ischia Black.  I wish I video taped this one for documentation but I did take pictures.  I did not give up on this fig because of the thread that mentioned evidence of it produceing a fig without the fig wasp.  http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Zidi-Fig-2195532?highlight=zidi  Now I have three plants, wait a minute you are not going to believe this.  I was just going to write about whether it was worth the effort because I know I have three plants and I remember two figs dropped on the ground, one fig rotted on the tree and then this one ripened.  I just ran out to find the third tree and I found a forked main branch plant with another fork off another branch.  To my amazement there is a swelling fig at the end of each branch.  I can't type fast enough because this was a good fig.  I will definitely video tape these figs ripening.  The one I had today I was afraid something would take it in the night destroying any evidence. I brought it inside for the night so I might have to do the same for this one. 

Olga. Did any of those Zidi figs ripen for you? I have one small tree in cold storage right now. I'm hoping it does some growing this next season.

is there any way to hand polinate figs??

If I remember correctly the green one in the pictures ending up falling off.  I have three trees and did end up with two ripe figs.  This variety doesn't know if it wants to be a Smyrna fig or a common fig.   I don't think it produces a breba crop either so it's not a San Pedros.  The trees are three years old.

Yes you can poke a hole in the side of the fig and blow pollen in with an eye dropper or the like, but you need pollen. From what I understand, pollen only comes from the profichi crop of caprifigs. 

I remember reading somewhere that simply using a syringe to blow air into a caducous fig to disturb the flowers might cause it to persist. No idea if that actually works, but could be worth a try.

@ Andy. I've also heard that you can use a syringe to squirt a little water into the eye of a Capri fig then draw it out and then squirt that into the eye of the fig you're trying to pollinate. Question is though, is it really worth the effort? Maybe, if your goal is to develop a new fig variety. But that might merit a whole new thread for its own for discussion..............

I'll give zidi a try because I have rooted cuttings and because the wasp is in our county. But if it doesn't perform well enough, out it will go. There are so many other good figs if Z doesn't produce well here. I've also tasted zidi off a mature, pollinated tree this past year. It was very good, and attractive, but so are many others. A good old-fashioned Mission tasted better to me.
