What types i grow are the better of the two in my humble opinion - Dark Types

Just starting out. I have: In ground: Celeste, brown turkey, Marseilles black vs, ischia Green, Adriatic JH, Florea, Chicago Hardy, Rooting : ronde de Bordeaux, sal's G, Gino's, Maryland brown turkey, Figo Preto, Lsu gold, Hollier, improved Celeste, unknown black Madeira, plus above. It's just a hobby, but I have acreage and with success hope to locally market some produce if in ground trees thrive Bill. Z 7. Middle Tennessee

It is just a hobby with me, but I get very obsessed about it.  I read everything I can get my hands or eyes on and I am always looking for the next new cutting to try.

Below is a list of fig trees growing and or cutting with leaves I am growing.

I had two in ground figs the last couple of years and this fall decided to ratchet it up so in the last few months started trading for and buying cuttings.  My goal was to stop at 50 varieties but last week hit 60 varieties lol.   Currently have 28 varieties in ground and the rest are in cups or bags but going well.

Hardy chicago, black mission, marseilles black vs, green ischia, shtawi, birtati, bwaydi, negronne. Some of these i'm going to receive in the next few months though.

Scott, I'm surprised you only have what you do.  How is Hunt and Alma doing for you?

I am ashamed at the number of "fig variety experiments" I have going on in my yard.
I need to get my current on-line listing up to date.

Too many to list. Neither a hobby or a business, it's an ADDICTION! Currently rooting and recently rooted close to 200 and 20 or so older trees.

Thanks to DrivewayFarmer,Jon and eBay. I have quite a few. My favorites so far are Ronde de Bordeaux, Atreano and Paradiso Bronze. I haven't even tasted these yet. I have to agree with Tonycm. It is an addiction.

I started last year and now have 15 varieties plus 4 more coming soon. All are in containers so far.

I tend to cull (give away) ones that don't do well in the rain or aren't great tasting (to my taste) because I don't have unlimited room.

Hunt is a keeper although it tastes like a large Celeste right now. Alma has not done well for me yet. It produces a lot, but is just not good tasting (yet). If it doesn't produce, it goes down the road (there is a guy just down the road that will take it, he has my Mary Lane).

Oh wow , that is a big collection you got there, may I ask you which are your top 10 favorites and why?

Another 'too many to list' here. Mine are all young and many will be tasted for the first time this year.

I'm not sure how hardy I can say it is. It's in the ground now as of last fall. Until then was in a pot on the deck since 2009, I think. I know it has survived 20 F in a pot (just for a matter of hours)--if it was going below 20, I would usually slide it in the garage. I wanted it to get pretty big before I put it in the ground.

I haven't had a problem with loss of figs due to cold temperatures here (yet), but we haven't had a cold winter in a while--I'm north of Atlanta, but not too far. This winter wasn't much of a test, though even the 2 foot CdD I have in a pot on the deck never went into the garage. I have been known on really cold nights to string in the ground trees up with Christmas lights and throw a tarp over them.

A while back, somewhere here in this FF, I had predicted
that he will be one of the new younger-generation fig-gurus.
Just wait till he gains some more experience and his big fig collection matures some more.
Some fig variates do start with the 'A-B' letters, but many more also start with 'C ... Z'.

Dan, let me second Kerry - I would also love to hear your top 10 in each class.  It would also be helpful to know whether they are in-ground or in containers.

what other figs besides Desert King have you discarded?  What tree fruits are your figs competing with, THISISME?  As for your DK question, I thought Atreano is what you'd want.

shah8 I have discarded so many over the last eight plus years it's become somewhat of a blur. I used to have a list but lost it in a computer crash. Word to the wise. If your list is on your computer print it out and put it somewhere safe.

Anything with an open eye is gone. I pulled the LSU Gold too and put it in a pot. Could not stand seeing stink bugs going in and out if the eye. Here in Arizona many varieties do not properly ripen fruit due to our heat and low humidity. I like VDB because it has a closed eye and the fruit ripen properly and it produces over a long season. Everything else is still under trial. Though I like the flavor of Paradiso and Conadria. I will have to wait and see how productive they are before I call them keepers. The JSK and Panache where just planted in the last few weeks.

I got rid of all the apples and peaches and nectarines too. I want easy things to grow that produce lots of tasty fruit. Like Dave I too got rid of Black Mission. It looked good but produced not one single edible piece of fruit in four years.

I have a Desert King in ground and a few varieties here in there in pots. All was good and I was a 'normal' fig grower. Then I got the fig fever and cracked out. Now? Now I have a full blown addiction and have expanded my collection to an obscene amount. Well, at least for me. I see a couple here that I can aspire to grow to, lol. I still got some more space...

THISISME ain't kidding.   Over a third of my in ground trees are his discards. 

From THISISME, balck mission, desert king, atreano, col de dam, celeste, VDB, and a couple of unknowns.
The rest of my trees include a hardy chicago, a couple Havasu trees, and a whole bunch unknowns I am growing  from cuttings given to me by forum members, courtesey of Joanne, Brent, Luke, Joe, Gabe, Daniel, and a couple of locals.

Thanks to all of you. Many should fruit for the first time this year, and we are looking forward to it.

The in ground CDD was just fine this spring and is leafing out well. Occasionally, I will pinch trees if it looks like the figs are still too green in late fall. I don't routinely pinch everything. The Hardy Chicago on the southeast side of the house will put on figs till a hard frost, so it may need pinching.

I started off trying to acquire mainly middle eastern varieties. I don't really have a good reason for it though. Now I find myself wanting everything.

I probably have more now than when I first replied to this thread half a year ago. ;)
