Hi Armando,
Welcome to San Diego.  I look forward to meeting you, as well as other fig nuts tomorrow.   Dress for hot muggy weather, maybe high 80's and 60% humidity.   Unusual for us to see this kind of sustained humidity.  The baby figs loving it...!

Will see you guys tomorrow AM!
The weather this summer is very unusual, humid in LA as well.

I thought to bring a couple of figs to trade/give away but they grow so fast !!!
I think the tallest one is about 3 ft, will barely fit into my car.

Dear wife made me a special "Quinoa" Salad with fresh figs to share.  I've got ripe figs in the refrigerator overnight and will add with other ingredients in the morning.   Should be good.....

Hi Sue,

So nice to meet you at the Fig Fiesta, I’ve long enjoyed your forum posts.

Thank you for the salad compliment,  I did pass along to dear wife for big smile.

Several others requested the recipe so; I thought I would just post here on the forum.   I’ve never watched wife make this before but, after she explained, it looks like something even I could do.  Mind you, I don’t wear the culinary pants in this house!  Anyway, a quick Google search on “Quinoa Salad” will reveal many many variations of this same one.  All look to be tasty and healthy dishes.

Bon Appétit

QUINOA Salad with Figs

Ingredients:

1 C                          Red or Tricolor Quinoa (Trader Joe’s is wife’s choice)
2 C                          Veggie Broth
1 each                     Red, Yellow & Green Bell Peppers (diced)
4 stalks                   Celery (diced)
½                            Red Onion (diced)
1 C                          Cucumber (diced)
1 c                           Figs, diced or sliced
¼ - ½                      Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2                             Limes… juiced
Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions:

1…Rinse and follow directions on pkg.  Can be cooked the day before and chilled.

Wash quinoa and add to a medium saucepan. Add water or broth, salt and boil, covered for 15 minutes or until all the water has absorbed. You will know when they are cooked when they are fluffy and you see a small thread. Fluff with a fork and it will be ready to use for other recipes. You can store it in the refrigerator for 3 or 4 days and reheat in the microwave.

2…Mix prepared Quinoa and diced veggies.

3…Add dressing and toss well.

4…Chill at least 4 hours or overnight.

5…Add Figs right before serving.  (option… more sliced or half figs on top for appearance)

Serve chilled and enjoy.   Refrigerate any left overs

I enjoyed this salad very much and all the other food.  Had I not eaten so much of the great Mexican food,  fig ice cream, fig pie and everything else, I would have had room for more of those figs at the end.  Next time, lets eat some figs for an appetizer first.

My favorite figs of the day were the Col de Dame and Yellow Long.  They were really good chilled.

I was also happy to win the RDB and Black Ischia for only $60 total!

it was good meeting everyone.

Armando a big thank you so much for taking pictures for the rest of us who couldn't be there. Can you please tell me what variety fig those are on the cutting board? I would like to know what that beautiful green-red fig is?

So Many Figs were brought out by Jon and Harvey and others that I can't remember, I would make a guess that these were from Jon's tree Vista. I remember him saying that he got the Vista from a man who lived nearby region. Harvey brought Jarupa and Sierra and others. So I would guess the green one is Sierra and the Greenish-brown is a Jarupa...Just a guess.

If you're referring to the 5th photo in post #11, I don't know what it is, but it's not 184-15.  I see 2 or 3 different green figs with red flesh in that photo.  The one with the more intense red color has more of a fat neck and might be a CdD, but I don't really remember.  It was not a fig I brought.

I'll guess that the last one of Armando's photos is of the Vista figs I brought.

Jon, I may be coming down for the Pitahaya Festival in Irvine on 8/21-8/23 (farm/garden tours on 8/24).

Bump: I had a great time last year visiting Jon's Tree Nursery in San Diego. I enjoyed the Jarupa, Col De Dame Blanc and others. Jon gave great information, bought 3 trees from him. Made the mistake of not taking one that had a number for a name. Big Mistake, if Jon says it's Good, then Take it...LOL   It was great meeting all the other collectors.  Will work on getting there and carpooling with the others.

Armando, if Jon had an Italian 258, I would have bought it before you even got out of your chair! LOL  I could have missed it, I suppose, but I can't see how....and it's one that is in high demand.  He did have Italian 215 at some point (I sent him the cuttings).  Also, maybe Italian 253 is something I sent him.
