On a walk yesterday, as often happens, I saw a fig tree overhanging a fence and decided to see if there were any ripe figs on it. There were. |

Yes I took three, hopefully they will take, or else ill be back for more. The tree is quite large, but not too many branches over the public side of the fence. |

Naiki mate,I am Kausik from Adelaide. Interesting enough i found the the same variety of fig month ago during my walk. The tree was big and already had a ripe fig on it. I add my pics here it look exactly same like your. that very distictive purple border stands out. One of the cutting I took already rooted and in a pot hardenning outside. It rooted very quickly in ziplock bag. Will be good to identify this variety, because the fig taste not bad. It is sweet and juicy.Thanks. |

there are few varieties that has that purple wine stain. if you search the forum for "wine stain" you will find some. some Conadria brebas has that, there are other figs which does that also. |

Thanks bullet, they do look quite similar, and Conadria has been known in Aus, however is not very common, I dont know of any nursery that stocks it, online or otherwise... |
Keep in mind there are not too many exotic varieties in Australia
Nate, you would be surprised how many 'exotic' varieties there are or have been in Australia. Just because the older generation of Greeks, Italians and Lebanese are unable to post photos on a forum, doesn't mean they aren't out there. Conadria has been grown in South Australia for a while. If it is Conadria, it should do fairly well in Canberra also. PS. I gave my reluctant brother in Palmerston a fig plant last weekend. He is still unconvinced that figs can be grown in Canberra. I told him about the fig growing out of the palm tree but I didn't have your photos handy; of course, he didn't believe me. He's a bit fixed in his ways! |
