I recently moved to EHT, NJ from California. In CA I had 2 fig trees (a Black Mission and a Panache).

I drove from CA to NJ in Dec 2013 with cuttings of 5 varieties in my truck. Sadly, none of them survived.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jason this week and he was kind enough to give me a small LDA tree and cuttings of Kathleen Blk.

I need suggestions of varieties that will grow in NJ in containers.

Welcome to the Forum, and to the Northeast. I'd get over to Bill's Figs in Flemington, NJ, he can sell you a Hardy Chicago, Violette de Bordeaux, Negronne (he sells both), and many others. The large size plants are a little pricey ($45). Good luck!

Welcome Marion, there are a bunch of us here in NJ. The Bill's figs recommendation is my suggestion too. I have a few of his figs and am a believer in his SIP's . Go for it and welcome to the forum

You're also not far from Trees of Joy.  Both are great places but I'd check with ToJ first to see if they have what you want before making the drive.  There are a lot of members in your area.

ROTFL... sorry Rich, I was very happy to escape NJ.  Between high taxes (property, income and sales), and all the crap to go through for a firearms permit every time you want to buy a gun, I had enough.  Right across the river, just South is Delaware!  Low property taxes, ZERO sales tax, and moderate income taxes, with very similar climate to NJ.  Oh, and did I mention just a simple instant background check to buy a firearm?

No offense meant, I love NJ, I grew up there, and I work there now.  I just never want to live there again.

Now Bill's figs is amazing!  Just checking out his website makes me want to drive up there.

  I agree wholeheartedly with Rich in post #3 and Phil in post #7.  Usually I encourage people to move out of NJ.  There's too many of us now -- but there's always room for fig lovers.
  Have you seen the size of the mosquitoes yet!?!?!?  The mosquito is the state bird!!!
  You should try to email or PM a member named 7deuce.  I believe he lives in EHT, or at least somewhere very very close, and he was recently looking to sell many of his trees.  You could start off with some fairly large trees and be eating figs this summer!!!

Bill's is definitely a great place to go. A couple weeks ago I picked up a new beehive in Flemington. Only as I got there, I realized the beekeeper lives about 1/2 mile down the road from Bill. He said he used to "play in Bill's yard" when he was a kid, because it was an empty lot or something then. Or maybe the property in front of his house - he's set back a bit off the road - hadn't been built yet...

Hi Marion

Welcome to the forum.  New jersey ain't California when it comes to growing figs, that's for sure.  Even if you are containerizing your trees you will not be able to properly ripen long-season, heat loving, varieties.  Concentrate on the short-season fig varieties, and you will do just fine.

Many, many forum members have successfully grown and ripened figs in your climate, and that information can be found in the "Figs for Your Location" thread.  Just do a search, or, just ask and the members will tell you what varieties to try.  Bill's Figs will probably be the closest source for trees....and, you'll have a better selection.  I hear good things about "SULTANE".  The best figs are those varieties that will properly ripen in your area.
