I have known this tree for 3 years now, I have been growing a cutting from it since last year. It's when I tasted it for the first time.

I, with no shame, extended my hand to the tree and pulled a ripe dark soft juicy sweet, like honey, fig from the tree and with no moment to lose ate it!
And I was sold on it. I mean...I went back again and again and again until the season was over. I admit, I was addicted to it's taste, the hipnotising aroma and the entire process of just taking it directly from the tree and gulping it down as if there was no tomorrow.
I had to do something about this habit of mine before it got me into trouble.
In January 2014 I decided to go meet the owner and confess.
So I knock the door and waited, ... nothing. I started to get carried away from the door and my eyes wandered onto the tree. She knew me! And as if, in a silly way, she was telling me "I knew you would come back". As I was exiting the front yard towards the tree I started to extend my hand and touched the branches and then I though ....OK, just a little twig, no one will notice?
The door opened and this half drunk young man appeared in the doorway with a smile and said..."were you wondering if you could have some cuttings?" I was speechless, replied "..how did you ", and he continued "take as much as you want, everybody does. It's a famous tree. Everybody loves to eat the fruits, but not me, I am allergic to figs"
That was what I needed to hear. No, not the part with allergies...LOL
I got my cuttings and got an invitation for the fruits when it's time.

Last Saturday, I was at Burbank Costco and remembered that I was close to the tree. Stopped by to check on her status and...she was waiting for me with her heavy delicious Brebas :)

             

Oh those look soooo good! I am still 60 days away from fresh figs and you are eating them by the bowl-full. Its not fair!

Aaron, that is ah -mazing.. Could it be a mission fig?  What is your take on it? You should come by with some stuff and ask permission to put an airlayer in a back branch... bring a tree home in a month...  nice pictures also.

Look a whole lot like Improved Brown Turkey to me.  It's a good fig!  Great find!

Those aren't really ripe yet.  Cover a few in organza bags and let them get soft and droopy for the best flavor.  I hope one has my name on it - either now or one you get later.   Pretty pleeeese   :)

The Improved Brown Turkey isn't talked about much here.  The name "Brown Turkey" turns folks away.  NOt me!  If ripe they are excellent.  And in California, they are twice as good b/c they will be pollinated by the wasp.  It's a very prolific bearer that doesn't stop putting out large figs.  It's not that hardy.  I had to bring mine indoors this winter and today its growing well inside a SWP.  Its a beautiful semi-drawf tree without FMV.  Some say its the same as the California Brown Turkey it may be.  I should know this year if it is.

Denis, by chance, are you talking about Black Jack? which is an Improved dwarf Brown Turkey (from what I read)?

The main crop of this tree above is smaller but much sweeter than the brebas.

I see a lot of Brown Turkey for sale in nurseries here - It has to say "Improved" to be the better variety then. I've not seen Improved in my area yet.

Thanks for clarifying that Blk Jack and Blk Spanish are different also Dennis . I have both , but have only had figs from Blk Jk so far and only a couple. Anxious to compare them.

Francisco, thanks, it truly was a good tasting fig, very refreshing with sweetness of not more than 8 on scale of 10. But the main crop is easy 10 because the weather is hotter and they overripe easily and caramelize.

It does looks similar to the Improved Brown Turkey that Dennis linked too. Mike in Hanover,VA

Cuttings anyone? 
There are 12 fresh cuttings from which 3 are add shaped ones, but probably put out more branches than regular cuttings, the rest are straight cuttings with minimum 3 nodes.

I already told my wife I was done with new fig cuttings until next season!  Those do look great; I wonder if they have been caprified?

Ed, not sure if they are pollinated, they felt pretty seedless to the tooth when I was eating.
But you know the area can be rich of wasps...so I am not sure.
And also, another thing I have noticed to be common with pollinated figs is that they develop this thin PURPLE layer between the Meat and the Skin, and I don't see it in the pics above.

I was just thinking which ninja garb I was gonna pack.  I don't think TSA would appreciate it if I showed up at the airport with my shinobi shozoku and tabi boots.  Of course, I'd have to declare my swords and ninja stars...I got the north covered.  Shailesh, you got the south.

In my book this fig is called "Burbank and Vineland Ave Fig".

Another great find.  Guess the climate helps a lot.  Can't wait until my figs are ripe.

What a great story!  I have a friend that has a HUGE fig tree that produces dark purple figs.  She has no idea what type.  I'm brand new at figs, but asked her for a few cuttings.  All four are just starting to show roots.

between 30-35 easy. it's from mid 80's but it was a mature tree when bought. (this is according the tenant who is the nephews of the owner of the house)

Yes i am posting about this fig. It is as good as it gets. Huge fig. Very very good. I have another that is swelled up and getting cracked skin but is not ready. Juicey without being watery .. Biggest fig yet. Does anyone else have this one ?

Photos Richie, photos please! then if it's great in taste then please let us know. Who else has cuttings ready to produce and if you have tasted any, what are they close to in taste? Aaron's photos look great. If everything is way above average then I will look for another cutting since mine bit the dust, otherwise I'm good, don't need anything big and bland. Hoping for great taste!

So Richie I guess you answered the pollination question and no wasp is required.

Meg, yes Aaron is in southern California but is no longer a member of the forum.  Richie thanks for confirming that this one doesn't need the wasp.  Hopefully, others will weigh in who are growing this variety.

If I end up driving there and IF I FIND the tree, I'll be happy to get more cuttings.  It's a wide area so I would have to drive around for a while looking for the tree.  Does anyone have an address or more detail on this location?
